Call It ‘Old’, ‘Contemporary’, ‘Modern’ or Whatever: It Is Slavery

Human Wrongs Watch

MADRID, Dec 1 2021 (IPS)* – No matter what it is called — it is the abhorrent daily life of a billion enslaved humans.  The real number of “modern” slaves is understandably unknown. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates that more than 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery.

Yet Another Scourge: A Third of All Women Are Subjected to Violence

Human Wrongs Watch

MADRID, Nov 23 2021 (IPS)* – Thirty percent of women and girls suffered physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most frequently by an intimate partner. And more than 70 percent of all sold, bought and enslaved victims of human smuggling and trafficking are women and girls — three out of four of them are sexually exploited.

.

These are just some of the brush strokes of a gloomy picture on the still prevailing violence practiced against women and girls, one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations, which remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.

These are figures drawn from recorded cases. Thus, it is not hard to imagine that the numbers and percentages are much higher.

“Nothing is as brutal as the death of a child’s dream,” said Satyarthi, who campaigned against child labour in his homeland. “We should feel the moral responsibility that we have to fulfill the dreams of these children.”

Daughters of a Lesser God (I) 800 Million Girls Forced to Be Mothers

Human Wrongs Watch

MADRID, Nov 3 2021 (IPS)* – Imagine your child, your daughter, being genitally mutilated and, further on, sold or even handed over for free to an older man who will force her to become a child mother, when her body is still far from being formed and thus able to bear with a so early pregnancy.

Well, it has been happening and it still happens right now. The victims are as many as a conservative 800 million child-girls.

And this is happening while rich societies are holding intensive debates about the right of adolescents and youngsters to enjoy their freedom of gathering in thousands and get drunk in massive parties in streets and squares without observing any of the most basic measures to prevent COVID19 contagion.

Sorry for coming back to this issue, but its immense human dimension justifies this new attempt to report on another aspect, which is deliberately hidden, unwanted to be seen by the new wave of racist, xenophobe, far-right pseudo-politicians, which is now steadily growing in the biggest industrialised powers on Earth: United States and so far a full dozen of European countries. See what it is about:

Every Half a Second…

Human Wrongs Watch

By Baher Kamal*

20 February 2018  (Wall Street International)* — The issue is tough, very tough. It is about the good, the bad and the ugly of the use – and misuse – that humans make of Internet.

On the one hand, users find quick answers from what you may call “Saint Google” or “Santa Wikipedia”. On the other, Internet is being glowingly misused and abused for steeling private information, bullying, sexual exploitation and even human trafficking.

And the issue has just jumped to the news again now that the United Nations informs that every half a second, every day, a child goes online for the first time – tapping into all the great opportunities the Internet has to offer, but facing grave risks.
