More Tragedy on the Mediterranean as 74 Migrants Reportedly Drown off Libya Coast

(UN News)*The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Thursday [12 November 2020] reported yet another devastating shipwreck in the Central Mediterranean, which has claimed the lives of at least 74 migrants off the coast of Khums, Libya. It is the eighth such incident since the beginning of October.

IOM/Hussein Ben Mosa | There were just 47 survivors when a boat carrying over 120 people, capsized off the Libyan coast on Thursday.
The boat was reported to be carrying more than 120 people, among them women and children. A total of 47 survivors were brought to shore by the coast guard and local fishermen. More than 30 bodies have been retrieved, but the search continues.

International Organization for Migration Warns of Humanitarian Crisis as Hundreds of Migrants Are Evicted from Bosnian Camp

Bihac, 2 October 2020 (IOM)*  – “This is what the start of a humanitarian crisis looks like”, warned IOM’s representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina today [2 October 2020], as hundreds of migrants were forcibly removed from the IOM-run accommodation which has been sheltering migrants and refugees for almost two years.

bira_4IOM is warning of a humanitarian crisis as 350 migrants and refugees were forcibly removed from the IOM-run accommodation in Bira, Bosnia.

“Beyond the inhumanity of it all, it is difficult to see how last night’s action addresses the legitimate concerns of local citizens”, said Peter Van der Auweraert, IOM’s sub-regional coordinator for the Western Balkans.

(UN News)* — The UN human rights office OHCHR, called on Friday [2 October 2020] for urgent action to address the “unimaginable horrors” faced by migrants attempting to cross the central Mediterranean Sea in search of safety in Europe.

IOM Libya | Migrants who have been returned to shore in Libya after attempting to cross the sea to Europe are supported by aid workers from the IOM.

OHCHR highlighted what it called a “cycle of violence” whereby people faced deprivation and abuse in Libya, only to be left to drift “for days at sea”.

Although increasing numbers of people have been crossing the Channel by boat this summer, the numbers remain low and manageable. People forced by wars and persecution to flee their homes and people on the move frequently embark on risky journeys in many parts of the world.

Mauritania: A Milestone Reform of Laws Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants

Nouakchott, 17 July 2020 (IOM)*  – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) welcomed this month the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, whose National Assembly passed on 7 July a new law against trafficking in persons and endorsed the reform of the law against the smuggling of migrants. These instruments contribute to strengthening the existing legal framework to repress and punish the perpetrators of these crimes and provide better protection and assistance to victims.
