Kofi Annan, the Last UN Secretary-General Who Paid for His Independence

Human Wrongs Watch

ROME, 13 September  2018 (Other News)This testimony to Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General, comes a month after his death. Much has already been written, and it is now superfluous to recall his efforts for peace and international cooperation. It is better to place his figure in a crucial context: how the great powers progressively reduced the figure of the UN Secretary-General and charged a high price from those who tried to keep the system’s independence.

First of all, it must be remembered that the United Nations was born – to a considerable extent – due to the strong propulsive drive of the United States.

The United States, the great winners of the Second World War [with 416,800 soldiers and 1,700 civilians dead, compared with over 20 million Soviet Union soldiers and civilians], wanted to avoid the recurrence of a new world conflict.

It therefore sought the construction of a multilateral system, able to maintain – through peace in a ruined world – its economic and military hegemony intact.

Freedom, Its Feasibility

(Wall Street International)* — Being free is a secular yearning.

Since always, life in society organizes itself generating those who submit, the slaves and the free ones.

In Greek Polis, for example, there was a strong distinction between slaves and free men. Plato considered this an inevitable reality from which everything would be established. Men were slaves or masters by birth and this was an association or organization not derived from conventions and agreements; these were human characteristics.

Immigration: Many Myths and Little Reality

By Roberto Savio*

ROME, 17 July 2018  (Other News)*According to the latest statistics, the total flow of immigrants so far in 2018 is 50.000 people, compared with 186,768 last year, 1,259,955 in 2016 and 1,327,825 in 2015. The difference between reality and perceptions is so astonishing, we are clearly witnessing one of the most brilliant manipulations in history.

The latest survey carried out of 23,000 citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States shows an enormous level of disinformation.

In five of those countries, people believe that immigrants are three times higher than they actually are.

Italians believe they account for 30% of the population when the figure is actually 10%, an average which is lower than the media of the European Union.

Trump Is Here to Stay and Change the World

Human Wrongs Watch

By Roberto Savio

Rome, 18 June 2018 (Other News) – Donald John Trump, 45th and current president of the United States, has been seen in many illustrious circles as an anomaly that cannot last. Well, it is time to look at reality.

savio-small1

Roberto Savio

If we put on the glasses of people who have seen their level of income reduced and are afraid of the future, Trump is here to stay, and he is a result and not a cause.

In his year and a half of government, Trump has not lost one of his battles. He has changed the political discourse worldwide, established new standards of ethics in politics, a new meaning of democracy, and his electoral basis has not been shrinking at all.

Meanwhile, Around the World

Human Wrongs Watch

By Johan Galtung*

Kyoto, 4 Jun 2018 – TRANSCEND Media Service — The world may be losing a peace opportunity in the USA-North Korea conflict.  With NK nuclear-tipped missiles capable of reaching mainland USA something close to “balance of power” had been obtained, by many seen as the key to peace via “mutual and balanced” disarmamenteven to “general and complete disarmament” (GCD).

Whether this ever happened is unclear.  States tend to see “balance” as having more than the other and suspecting that of him.

But something else may happen: distargeting, not aiming at each other.

However, in all these formulas there is an element of equality, of the symmetry that may be a condition for peace. But symmetry is unacceptable to USA.

That state does not see itself as being on an equal footing with anybody in the world, and certainly not with small, even if very powerful, North Korea.

The same applies to “negotiation” as a mutual give-and-take.

Risks and Effects of Trade Protectionism – The Role of the State in Capitalism

Human Wrongs Watch

By George Perendia*

12 April 2018 (Wall Street International)  In his recent, excellent analysis, Roberto Savio has probably rightly brought to our attention the quickly growing issue of the social costs of robotisation (see Robots, unemployment … and immigrants).

Nevertheless, however alarming the issue, the risks of automatisation probably did not find their fair place among the top most likely and the highest impact “risks” as perceived by the those surveyed ahead of this year’s Davos World Economic Forum [1], but instead, much more, towards those least expected and the least severe risks.

A Song Is Born

Human Wrongs Watch

By Uri Avnery*

07/04/2018

A FRIEND from overseas sent me the recording of a song. An Arab song, with a soft Arab melody, sung by an Arab girls’ choir, accompanied by a flute.

It goes like this:

Ahed / You are the promise and the glory / Standing as high as an olive tree / From the cradle to the present / Your honor will not be violated / Palestine has been planted in us / As a dock for every ship / We are the land and you are the water /

You are covered with blond hair / You are as pure as Jerusalem / You taught our generation how the forgotten people should revolt / They thought the Palestinians are afraid of them because they are wearing armor and holding a weapon? / Palestine has been planted in us / As a dock for every ship / Our nation must be united and resist for the freedom of Palestine and the prisoners /

10 Reflections on Today’s Crisis

Human Wrongs Watch

By Roberto Savio*

ROME, April 2018 —  It is now clearly evident that we are in a period of transition, even though its outcome remains uncertain.

savio-small1

Roberto Savio

The political, economic and social system that has accompanied us since the end of the Second World War is no longer sustainable.

The exponentially growing inequalities have, according to Amnesty International, taken us back to almost to levels seen in Victorian times – albeit now at a global level.

Ten years ago, 652 people had the same wealth as 2.3 billion people. Now there are eight.

Today’s eighteen-year-olds, according to projections of the International Labour Organization, will retire with an average pension of 632 euros a month.

Despite official warnings, we are, amidst great indifference, breaching the 2 degrees centigrade temperature limit beyond which our planet will undergo irreversible changes.

Because There Is Nothing

Human Wrongs Watch

By Uri Avnery*

3 March 2018

THE FLOOD of corruption affairs that is now engulfing the Netanyahu family and its assistants and servitors does not seem to diminish his popularity among those who call themselves “the People”.

On the contrary, according to the opinion polls, the voters of the other nationalist parties are rushing to the rescue of “Bibi”.

They believe that he is a great statesman, the savior of Israel, and are therefore ready to forgive and forget everything else. Huge bribes, generous gifts, everything.

Strange. Because my attitude is exactly the opposite. I am not ready to forgive “Bibi” anything for being a great statesman, because I think that he is a very minor statesman. Indeed, no statesman at all.

The Coming Wars to End All Wars

Human Wrongs Watch

By Edward Curtin*

26 February 2018 – TRANSCEND Media Service

“The compulsive hatred of Putin by many who have almost zero idea about Putin or Russian history is disproportionate to any rational analysis, but not surprising. Trump and Putin are like weird doppelgangers in the liberal imagination.”
— John Steppling, “Trump, Putin, and Nikolas Cruz Walk into a Bar”

The Trump and Netanyahu governments have a problem: How to start a greatly expanded Middle-Eastern war without having a justifiable reason for one.

No doubt they are working hard to solve this urgent problem.

If they can’t find a “justification” (which they can’t), they will have to create one (which they will).

Or perhaps they will find what they have already created.
