Disarmament of Nuclear and 'Conventional' Weapons Urgent amid Mounting Global Violence

Human Wrongs Watch

Addressing the opening of the 2015 substantive session of the Organization’s Disarmament Commission (UNDC) in New York, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane warned gathered delegates that efforts to reduce the global circulation of weaponry had stalled and that the prospects of nuclear disarmament were particularly “dim.”

“I have never seen a wider divide between nuclear haves and nuclear have-nots,” declared Kane.

She added that the “schism” continued to act as a “significant” obstacle to non-proliferation and underscored the need “to bridge the fissure” between Member States while noting that the world’s brewing conflicts had fed the increasing proliferation of conventional weapons.

We need to come to the point where no country has any nuclear weapons and at the same time all weapons of mass destruction and nuclear arms need to be destroyed,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast told state news agency IRNA.

However, countries should have the right to “make use of nuclear activities for peaceful purposes,” he added.

Speaking in Moscow, Iran’s foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi also said that North Korea as a sovereign state had its right to carry out a nuclear test.

North Korea, as far as I know, is not signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty, so it can afford acting according to its own interests,” Salehi told journalists.

World Nuclear Forces: ‘Fewer But Newer’ Weapons

Human Wrongs Watch

At the start of 2012 eight states—the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan and Israel — possessed approximately 4400 operational nuclear weapons, according to a new report.

Nearly 2000 of these are kept in a state of high operational alert. If all nuclear warheads are counted, these states together possess a total of approximately 19 000 nuclear weapons (see table), as compared with 20 530 at the beginning of 2011, says the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), in its Yearbook 2012.

The decrease is due mainly to Russia and the USA further reducing their inventories of strategic nuclear weapons under the terms of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START) as well as retiring ageing and obsolescent weapons, adds the report.

A Nuclear-Armed European Union? A Proposal Under Fire

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 7 2024 (IPS)* – The continued veiled threats from Russia, warning of nuclear attacks on Ukraine, have prompted some politicians in Europe to visualize a nuclear-armed European Union (EU).

European Nuclear Deterrent a Harebrained Illegal Proposal

Human Wrongs Watch

*

NEW YORK, Jun 6 2024 (IPS)* It is quite astonishing and clearly insane, that Manfred Weber, the German leader of the European Union’s center-right European People’s Party, now expected to come in first in the European Parliament election scheduled on June 6-9th, is calling for the EU’s own nuclear “deterrent”—arguing that the US-stationed nuclear weapons in five NATO states, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherland, and Turkey, may be inadequate protection for Europe’s security should Trump, that great friend of Russia, be elected!

A Desperate Plea from Palestinians: Drop Your Nuclear Bomb on Gaza–and Exterminate Us

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 18 2023 (IPS)* – The unrestrained destruction of Gaza and the disproportionate killings of over 17,000, mostly civilians– in retaliation for 1,200 killings by Hamas and 120 hostages in captivity– have left the Palestinians in a state of deep isolation and weighed down by a feeling of being deserted by the world at large.

Ukraine and the Danger of Nuclear War

Human Wrongs Watch

By John Scales Avery, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service*

Endless Arms for Ukraine

In the United States, the Biden administration has adopted the policy of sending many billions of dollars’ worth of advanced weapons to Ukraine, with the hope of weakening Russia, and in the hope of a Ukrainian victory.

John-Scales-Avery

John Scales Avery

An underlying motive can be found in the enormous profits made by the American weapons industry.

In fact, the military-industrial complex (against which President Eisenhower warned in his famous Farewell Address) has complete control over both political parties.

The latest yearly appropriation for military purposes was almost a trillion dollars.

The war in Ukraine has always been a proxy war between NATO and Russia, although it is being fought on Ukrainian soil, and although it involves great suffering for the Ukrainian people.

UN Chief Calls for an End to ‘Nuclear Blackmail’ and Risk of ‘Humanitarian Armageddon’

Human Wrongs Watch

(UN News)* — In an era of “nuclear blackmail”, UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday [26 September 2022] urged countries to step back from the threat of potential global catastrophe and recommit to peace.

UN/Ingrid Kasper | The “Good Defeats Evil” sculpture, located at UN Headquarters in New York, depicts an allegorical St. George slaying a double-headed dragon – symbolic of a nuclear war vanquished by historic treaties between the Soviet Union and United States.

The UN chief was speaking at an event to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held as the annual debate in the General Assembly Hall draws to a close.

“Nuclear weapons are the most destructive power ever created. They offer no security — just carnage and chaos. Their elimination would be the greatest gift we could bestow on future generations,” he said.
