Rome, 11 June 2015 – Only 50 years of Cold War (and the fact that German Chancellor Angela Merkel grew up in East Germany) can possibly explain the strange political power of the United States over Europe.

After a bilateral meeting between Merkel and U.S. President Barack Obama (so much for transparency and participation), the Jun. 7-8 G7 summit opened in Germany and we found out that there had been a trade-off.
Merkel agreed that Europe should continue the sanctions against Russia – and so the other members of the G7 duly agreed – and Obama toned down the U.S. position on Greece.
That position had been forcefully expressed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew a few days earlier to European leaders: solve the Greek problem, or this will have a global impact that we cannot afford.
Merkel agreed that Europe should continue the sanctions against Russia – and so the other members of the G7 duly agreed – and Obama toned down the U.S. position on Greece.
This had suddenly accelerated negotiations, with the hope then that everything would be solved before the G7 summit.

9 June 2015 (RT)* – To deal with the migrant crisis the EU has to change its relations with the countries of the global South, to implement a policy to integrate migrants into the EU and to ensure they won’t be socially discriminated, says human rights activist Ajamu Baraka.

On Monday [8 June], nearly 100 migrants and activists were detained in Paris as the police were trying to clear an unauthorized migrant camp in the city center.
But it’s not just France that is trying to deal with the increasing number of people attempting to cross the Mediterranean to enter Europe. This weekend European ships rescued almost 6,000 migrants who had run into trouble on their way to Italy.

10 June 2015 (RT)* – WikiLeaks published more secret documents from the controversial TPP agreement on Wednesday [10 June]. The leaked drafts concerning healthcare in the US have activists worried the agreement might play into the hands of big pharmaceutical companies.

The secretly negotiated trade deal has been widely opposed by industry professionals and activists in many countries, as it could “empower big pharmaceutical firms to command higher reimbursement rates in the United States and abroad, at the expense of consumers,” the New York Times wrote.
“American negotiators are still pressing participating governments to open the process that sets reimbursement rates for drugs and medical devices,” the publication added.

10 June 2015 – Refugee and migrant arrivals to Europe across the Mediterranean so far in 2015 have moved above 100,000, with record numbers now arriving every day in the Greek islands, the United Nations refugee agency has confirmed.

Official figures show that as of 8 June a total of 103,000 refugees and migrants had arrived in Europe: 54,000 in Italy, 48,000 in Greece, 91 on Malta and 920 in Spain, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).*

9 June 2015 (RT)* – A key vote on the controversial TTIP resolution was postponed by European Parliament last minute on Tuesday [9 June]. While a large number of amendments have been cited as the reason for the delay, some believe the “mounting public pressure” is “bearing fruit.”

The plenary Wednesday vote on Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) resolution was postponed by the European Parliament’s president on Tuesday evening.
The vote on the controversial report following the ongoing EU-US TTIP trade and investment negotiations will not take place “in view of the fact that more than 200 amendments and requests for split or separate votes have been tabled,” President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz announced.

10 June 2015 – I have just read Andre Vltchek’s new book ‘Exposing Lies of the Empire‘. Let me tell you something about this book of 800 pages.

Vltchek writes with passion and poetry, describing the true horror experienced by the world at large, living at the gunpoint of the imperial powers, while also describing and drawing you into a world of progress, culture and refinement that exists in some places and, so we are tantalised, might exist elsewhere too and even, perhaps, one day for us all.
If you want to begin to understand Vltchek himself, you should start with the chapter headed ‘Solitude of an Internationalist: Our Leningrad’.

The club that has been bringing together west’s most influential financiers, media moguls, industry captains, politicians and royalty for over six decades, is meeting this week in Austria.
Some 140 guests are to visit the Telfs-Buchen alpine resort, where this year’s conference is to be held, just 20 km from the site of the G7 summit. The group has published its agenda and guest list ahead of the four-day private event.

8 June 2015 – We live in the Era of the Great Transformations. There are many, but I will mention just two: the first relating to the economy and the second to the realm conscience.
First, the economy: It began in 1834 when the industrial revolution was consolidated in England. It consists of moving from a market economy to a market society.
The market has always existed throughout the history of humanity, but never before has there been a society consisting only of the market. In other words, the only thing that counts is the economy.
Everything else must serve the economy.
The market that predominates is ruled by competition rather than cooperation. What is sought is individual or corporative economic benefit, not the common good of the entire society.
The cost of attaining this benefit is usually the devastation of nature, and creation of perverse social inequalities.

More than 150 migrants are arriving every day on the Greek island of Lesvos. Locals are doing their best to receive them but many are left to fend for themselves.

Just 10 kilometres separate the Greek island Lesvos from Turkey.
In the early morning, when the sea is calmest, small, inflatable dinghies can be seen approaching the island’s northern shores of Molyvos and Skala Sykaminias.
