Violent attacks. The Boko Haram crisis. Fighting over land. Economic insecurity. There are many dangers facing the people of Nigeria. What is it like for parents, teachers and children to live with these threats?
“We don’t have peace of mind. We never know what could happen, whether we’re at home or on our farm or elsewhere. You can be attacked anywhere nowadays,” said Aishatu Musa, mother of four (pictured above).
Here you will hear from some of them.
We help children in Nigeria build their future
The Norwegian Refugee Council works to give children and young people in Nigeria a good and safe education. This is what we do:
- Help children catch up on missed schooling (ages 6–14).
- Train teachers on psychosocial support through our Better Learning Programme (BLP), which supports children’s recovery from traumatic events by restoring a sense of normal life and hope.
- Provide young people (aged 15–24) with vocational training and training in social belonging and life skills so that they can engage productively in the local community.
- Build temporary learning centres in camps and existing schools.
- Rehabilitate damaged classrooms so that more children can attend school.
- Provide school supplies, access to clean water and hygiene kits.
- Train teachers in pedagogy, gender and disability integration, and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse of children in schools.
In 2024, 37,871 children and young people received support through our education programming.
