Ukraine Crisis ‘Forgotten by the World’

With 4.4 million people in Ukraine soon to enter a fifth year of conflict, the international community has an important role to play in supporting conflict resolution and bringing about lasting peace – the only durable humanitarian solution for the affected population, a senior United Nations official has said.

“This crisis is happening in Europe’s backyard, yet it is largely forgotten by the world,” UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ursula Mueller told a European conference on the humanitarian crisis in eastern Ukraine and the way forward, held on 28 February 2018 in Brussels, Belgium.

New Global Data Collection Tool to Help Reduce Disaster, Losses Taking ‘a Huge Toll’

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) kick-offed on 1 March 2018 a “historic” new effort to collect comprehensive global data on disaster losses.

 “It is impossible to prevent disasters and to manage risk if a country is not measuring its disaster losses, particularly at the local level, for both small-scale and large-scale events,” said the Secretary-General’s newly appointed Special Representative of the for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mami Mizutori.

Libya: Tawerghans Must Not Be Held Hostage to Political Crisis, UN Says, Urging Safe Return

The United Nations and its partners in Libya have called for the voluntary, safe and dignified return of the population displaced from the northern town of Tawergha without a delay, expressing deep concern about the situation faced by these people living in makeshift-tented settlements in nearby areas.

19 Million Newborns at Risk of Brain Damage Every Year Due to Iodine Deficiency – UN

Nearly 19 million babies born globally every year – 14 per cent – are at risk of permanent yet preventable brain damage and reduced cognitive function due to a lack of iodine in the earliest years of life, according to a United Nations-backed report released on 1 March 2018.

The report from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and its partner, the Global Alliance of Improved Nutrition (GAIN), notes that insufficient iodine during pregnancy and infancy results in neurological and psychological deficits, reducing a child’s IQ by 8 to 10 points.
