3 July, 2018 (Greenpeace)* — I first learned to fish when I was young. My parents taught me, and they said that our island of Karimun Jawa was the absolute best place for it because it lay between Java and Borneo, where the seas are rich and bountiful.

When it rains, water flows off the top of the barges into the ocean, turning it black. When it’s hot and the sun is baking down, the coal heats up and starts to smoke, making us cough and we have trouble breathing. Once, my friend started violently vomiting because the fumes were too much.

Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 45,808 in 2018; Deaths: 1,405

Geneva, 3 July 2018 (IOM)* – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 45,808 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 1 July, with just around 36 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece (29%) and Spain (34%).

A small number of arrivals have been reported landing this year to Cyprus and Malta, 47 and 243 migrants, respectively, or less than 1% of all Mediterranean Sea arrivals.

In a visit to South Sudan on 3 July 2018, the UN Deputy Secretary-General spoke mother-to-mother with displaced women, pledging that she and other senior women leaders from the international community will not give up on the hope for peace for their nation.

Poorer Countries Set to Be ‘Increasingly Dependent’ on Food Imports to Feed Their People

Poorer countries with rising populations and scarce natural resources are likely to be “increasingly dependent” on imports to feed their people, according to an annual report jointly compiled by the United Nations food agency, launched on 3 July 2018.

A new initiative designed to cut costs and improve cotton yields in India’s Maharashtra state, is helping some of the country’s most vulnerable farmers.

Although overall exports from countries and regions with plenty of agricultural land are forecast to increase, the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2018-2027 stressed that because agricultural trade plays an important role in food security, there needs to be an enabling trade policy environment.

As Many as 330,000 Displaced by Heavy Fighting in South-West Syria

Intense air and ground-based strikes at multiple locations in Syria’s south-western Dara’a governorate has resulted in the “largest displacement” in the area since the conflict began more than seven years ago, the United Nations refugee agency has reported.

Women-Friendly Spaces for Rohingya Refugees

3 July 2018 — Simple shelters that are little more than huts with bamboo sticks and plastic sheeting for walls, and tarpaulins overhead, are serving a very important purpose for refugee women and girls forced to flee their homes to the vast refugee camps of Bangladesh.

UNFPA Bangladesh/Allison Joyce | Young girls at a Women-Friendly Space at a Rohingya refugee settlement in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The Spaces offer women and girls a safe haven where they can find sanctuary and support.
They are offering persecuted Rohingya who fled the brutal violence in Myanmar a safe haven where they can find sanctuary and support, care of UN workers and partner agencies.

Some 19 Women-Friendly Spaces (WFS), also known as women’s centres or women’s safe spaces, set up by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) cater to hundreds-of-thousands of women and girls, providing healthcare and counselling, as well as professional case management for survivors of violence.
