Mexico’s Elections: The Battle at the Ballot Box, the Easiest One Ahead

In a study released earlier this month, researchers from El Colegio de México (Colmex) were emphatic about what they found to be the biggest challenge facing Mexico, as voters prepared to go to the polls on July 1.

“The main problem in the country is inequality,” said well-known journalist and academic Ricardo Raphael, presenting the report entitled Desigualdades en México 2018. “The second biggest problem in the country,” Raphael continued, “is inequality.”

“Horror knows no limit in Syria”

Statement by Henrietta H. Fore, UNICEF Executive Director, on the situation in southwest Syria

Families fleeing escalating violence in Deraa setting up tents on the southwestern borders of Syria.  The escalating hostilities in southwest Syria endanger an estimated 750,000 people - almost half of them children. The recent violence has also reportedly displaced over 45,000 people.  UNICEF and partners continue to provide health, nutrition and water & sanitation relief support to hundreds of thousands of families across southwest Syria.

DAMASCUS/AMMAN/NEW YORK, 27 June 2018 (UNICEF)* – “Horror knows no limit in Syria, where children are yet again caught in the crossfire of the latest wave of violence in the southwest. Fighting has displaced an estimated 20,000 children and their families in just three days. Four children have reportedly been killed and many more have been injured.

‘All parties must immediately stop attacks directed against medical and educational facilities’ in Southwestern Syria’ – UN Chief

30 June 2018 — Expressing “deep alarm” over increased hostilities in southwestern Syria and its “devastating” toll on civilians, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate cessation of the military operations.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Guterres called on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights laws, protect civilians and facilitate safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access.

“Sahel, Land of Opportunities” – A Major UN Support Plan to Promote Peace and Growth in 10 African Countries

The support plan, entitled “Sahel, Land of Opportunities” targets 10 countries, namely Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Senegal, the Gambia, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Cameroon.
