28 September 2018 (FAO)* – “Women”and “fishing” are two words that would not have been used together in the same sentence a few years ago in Rwanda. It has been a long-held belief in Rwanda that fishing is not for women – it is a man’s occupation. Women have mostly embraced this thinking as well, but a few brave women from Nkombo, an island on Lake Kivu in the Rusizi District, are determined to prove that what a man can do, a woman can do too.

One of these women is Valeria Maniraguha, a 38-year-old mother of four children who started fishing in 2010. Prior to launching her career as a fisherwoman, she used to sell fish, a set of skills that still proves useful on the days when she participates in selling what she catches.

“Heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, chronic Lyme disease, depression” – just some of the illnesses outlined by World Health Organization (WHO) chief Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, who drove home the danger by asking delegates to stand up, when they heard the name of an illness that had killed someone they loved: One by one, every single person in the room, got to their feet.

25 25 September 2018 (Wall Street International)* – The images of the weeping Angelica Rebeca Gonzalez-Garcia, the Guatemalan mother being united with her daughter, was heart-wrenching. All who watched this reunion surely shed tears with the mother. A moral and humane victory had been won.
There is another group of weeping mothers, however, who will never be reunited with their children. These are African American mothers whose sons have been the victims of police deadly force.

25 September 2018 (openDemocracy)* – A dangerous polarisation exists in our society. New technologies and digital media intensify a process of misinformation that feeds into this polarisation, but if we want fair elections, we must combat this.

- The common home that does not exist

Riccardo Petrella
The first vast work of “worldwide” occupation and predation of the Earth and its inhabitants was that begun in the sixteenth century by a number of European states (Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, England and France).
After the First World War, new actors – no less conquerors and predators than the former (in particular, the United States, Soviet Union, Japan and Germany) – extended and intensified the work of occupation and exploitation of the planet and the world.
Today, “thanks” also to China, India, Korea, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other “minor” actors (South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Egypt, etc.), we can say that the work of conquest and of predation is truly “global”, planetary.
Even the space that unites the Earth with the rest of the solar system and beyond does not escape this work, well foreseen (I hope I’m wrong) by Asimov, Matrixand Stars Wars.

It is with deep concern and regret that I witness Northern Ireland has been without a Parliament for eighteen months. It astonishes to me that some of our political representatives, who know full well that their refusal to sit around the Executive Table and the Assembly in Stormont Parliament, means a political stalemate and a vacuum of power.

Mairead Corrigan Maguire
Refusal to represent the people who have elected our politicians, directly affects many: There is a lack of spending in our infrastructure, education, health care and job creation.
This leads to unemployment, homelessness, and insufficient wages. Instability in our governance deters past and future investors.

24 September 2018 (Wall Street International)* – Ferocity is characteristic of beasts and of humans who become violent, dehumanized and ferocious. One becomes fierce quickly and it is also easy to reduce a human being to its biological dimensions, to its needs.
