On Thin, Melting Ice

6 September 2018 (UN Environment)* –  Mer de Glace”, or Sea of Ice, is France’s largest glacier and the second largest in the Alps. Located in the Mont Blanc massif, the glacier lies above the Chamonix valley and is surrounded by majestic peaks, such as Aiguille du Moine, Aiguille du Charmez and the famous Aiguille du Midi.

In addition to admiring its natural beauty, there is one more reason one should visit Mer de Glace: to see climate change in action. “Mer de Glace is a true eye-opener,” says Kateryna Shornikova, of UN Environment’s Europe Office, who visited the glacier recently. “It helps understand what climate change means in real life.”

Like all glaciers, Mer de Glace is in continuous motion. The 200-metre-deep glacier flows for 7 km down the northern side of Mont Blanc, at a rate of about one centimetre per hour.

‘Much Greater Accountability and Effort Needed to Prevent Grave Violations against Children across South Sudan’ -Special Envoy for Children and Armed Conflict

Virginia Gamba, the United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, on 7 September 2018 called for much greater accountability and effort, to prevent grave violations against children across the world’s youngest nation, South Sudan.

Speaking in the capital Juba, at the end of four-day mission to the country, she said that in 2017, close to 1,400 children had been directly affected, with thousands more bearing the brunt of conflict. Gamba called on those in authority to take concrete action to end the violations and prevent any recurrence.

Violence at School an ‘Unforgettable Lesson’ Faced by More than Half the World’s Children – UNICEF

Around 150 million school children aged 13-15 are the victims of violence from their peers, says a new report from the UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF.

UNICEF/Adriana Zehbrauskas | In Villanueva, Honduras, Darwin, 16, sits in the classroom he shared with his friend Henry. Henry committed suicide in September 2016. According to a teacher, the close friends were targeted by bullies.

The study published on 6 September 2018, measures the number of students who report having been bullied over the period of a month, or involved in a physical fight during the previous year, and shows that for many young people, the school environment is not a safe place, but a danger zone where they have to learn in fear.

Inactivity Puts Physical and Mental Health of More than 1.4 Billion Adults at Risk – World Health Organization

4 September 2018 – Insufficient physical activity is a leading risk factor for non-communicable disease, negatively impacting mental health and overall quality of life, according to a newly released United Nations health agency study.

Published in The Lancet Global Health journal on Wednesday, the study highlights the well-established benefits of being physically active, including a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, as well as breast and colon cancer.

New Home for Scores of South Sudan’s Displaced

Nearly 3,500 people displaced by violence in South Sudan have been relocated from a UN-run camp in the capital, Juba, to temporary housing, the organization’s mission in the country, UNMISS, on 4 September 2018 reported.

The internally displaced people, who were living at a UN Protection of Civilians (PoC) site, have been moved to a new location at Mangateen, near the central part of the city.

Major Increase in Europe’s Refugee and Migrant Death Rate – UNHCR

4 September 2018 – The number of refugees and migrants reaching the European continent is going down, but the rate of fatalities has gone up dramatically, according to a new report from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.

Italian Coastguard/Massimo Sestini | The Italian Navy rescues migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.

The “Desperate Journeys” report states that 40 per cent fewer of those on the move, entered Europe via the Mediterranean this year, compared with 2017.

An overall increase in those arriving in Spain and Greece was more than offset by significantly lower arrivals in Italy.

4 September 2018 – From deforestation to soil degradation and pollution, tobacco production and its use by consumers, is “tremendously destructive” for the environment, although control measures can help curb its negative environmental effects, including the damaging impact of climate change, the head of the UN tobacco control treaty watchdog – formally known as the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC – has told UN News.
