The American Dream Is Alive and Well – in China

Human Wrongs Watch

By Ellen Brown | Web of Debt – TRANSCEND Media Service*

Home ownership has been called “the quintessential American dream.” Yet today less than 65% of American homes are owner occupied, and more than 50% of the equity in those homes is owned by the banks.

Compare China, where, despite facing one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world, a whopping 90% of families can afford to own their homes.

Over the last decade, American wages have stagnated and U.S. productivity has consistently been outpaced by China’s.

The U.S. government has responded by engaging in a trade war and imposing stiff tariffs in order to penalize China for what the White House deems unfair trade practices.

Sharing Can Change the World

Human Wrongs Watch

By Robin Perkins*

16 June 2019 (Greenpeace)* — This week between the 16th and the 21st of June we celebrate the 5th Global Sharing Week, the largest annual celebration of sharing in the world. This is not simply a celebration of the so-called “sharing economy” but another example of the growing movement to build a new system.

The Caribbean Addresses the Scourge of Plastic Pollution

Human Wrongs Watch

19 June 2019 (UN Environment)* — “Our world is swamped by harmful plastic waste. Microplastics in the seas now outnumber stars in our galaxy. From remote islands to the Artic, nowhere is untouched. If present trends continue, by 2050, our oceans will have more plastic than fish. The message is simple: reject single use plastic. Refuse what you can’t reuse. Together, we can chart a path to a cleaner, greener world,” said United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

Calling All Foodies: This One’s for You!

Human Wrongs Watch

18 June 2019 (FAO)* — Every year, June 18 marks Sustainable Gastronomy Day. This begs the questions: 1) What in the world is sustainable gastronomy? 2) Why is it important enough to have a “day” dedicated to it? and 3) Even so, why should I care?

Gastronomy is a cultural expression of the world’s natural and cultural diversity. On June 18, we celebrate Sustainable Gastronomy Day and acknowledge that everyone plays a role in making sustainable choices for healthy diets and a food-secure future. @ Chompoo Suriyo/ shutterstock.com
