Cascading Disasters Are Causing Extreme Weather to Pack an Even Bigger Punch

12 November 2019 (UN Environment)* — In November 2007, strong winds and heavy rain from Cyclone Sidr tore through the southern coast of Bangladesh. Soon, the coastal districts became a wasteland. Houses destroyed, tin shacks flattened and schools blown away. However, the destruction wrought by the deadly cyclone was only the beginning.

As the aftermath saw water and sanitation infrastructures heavily damaged and human waste left untreated, an outbreak of waterborne diseases added to the struggle of the recovery effort.

14 November 2019 (WHO)* — Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

The most common is type 2 diabetes, usually in adults, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough insulin. In the past three decades the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has risen dramatically in countries of all income levels.

Overly expensive insulin could be a thing of the past – and life-changing news – for millions of diabetics under a plan launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday [13 November 2019] to diversify production globally, just ahead of World Diabetes Day. *

Announcing the initiative in Geneva, the UN agency said that it had already had informal expressions of interest from pharmaceutical companies looking to produce insulin and have WHO assess whether it is safe for people to use.

UN Spotlights ‘Explosive’ Obesity Rates, Hunger in Latin America and Caribbean

Since 1975, adult obesity in Latin America and the Caribbean region has tripled, while one in four are going hungry, according to figures published by the UN on Tuesday [12 November 2019]. *

11 November 2019 (Wall Street International)* — This is the second in a series of articles about gender. I am one of the founders of the field of gender and have worked in that field nurturing its various crops for many seasons. Thus, I have strong opinions on gender transitioning and I believe that I have earned the right to speak authoritatively on the subject. Although there is much mischief afoot in this regard, including the paradoxical attempt in the academy to silence debate and discussion, there is no progress in ideas or actions without diversity of perspectives and critical thought. We must expose this complex issue to the light of day.

The rigid and traditional gender system of the Western cultures is only that and not science nor handed down from on high.

Pneumonia, a Preventable Disease – Kills More Children than any Other Infection: 1 Child Every 39 Seconds

LONDON/NEW YORK/BARCELONA, November 12, 2019 (UNICEF)* — Pneumonia claimed the lives of more than 800,000 children under the age of five last year, or one child every 39 seconds, according to a new analysis.

Most deaths occurred among children under the age of two, and almost 153,000 within the first month of life. [1]

Sounding the alarm about this forgotten epidemic, six leading health and children’s organisations are today launching an appeal for global action. [2]

Why Mercury Still Poses Important Threats to Human Health

12 November 2019 (UN Environment)* — In July, a 47-year-old woman showed up at the emergency department of her local hospital in Sacramento, California. Her speech was slurred, she couldn’t walk, and she was unable to feel her hands or face. The woman soon fell into a coma, where she remained for several weeks.

The cause of the woman’s desperate condition, health officials soon discovered, was a skin-lightening ingredient—mercury—that had been illegally mixed into her pot of face cream.

“Mercury poisoning has dangerous and sometimes irreversible effects, and while unborn babies are most vulnerable, anyone can suffer,” said Claudia ten Have, Senior Policy Coordination Officer at the Minamata Convention Secretariat.
