Denmark’s Inger Andersen Takes Over as Head of UN Environment Programme

Nairobi, 15 June 2019 (UN Environment)* – Danish economist and environmentalist Inger Andersen today took up her new role as Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, promising to prioritize greater action on climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution during her four-year tenure.

Ms. Andersen was nominated for the post by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and approved by the General Assembly in February 2019.

“I am proud and excited to begin work at the UN Environment Programme in beautiful Kenya at a critical time for humanity,” said Ms. Andersen.

“Good environmental stewardship has never been more important. Climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution in all its forms pose a clear and present danger to human and planetary health, and to prosperity.

South Sudanese Facing Famine in All but Name – World Food Programme

Record numbers in South Sudan – some seven million people – face acute food shortages, while more than 20,000 are close to famine, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned on Friday [14 June 2019].

WFP/Gabriela Vivacqua | Food distribution in Pieri, South Sudan, where WFP is assisting 29,000 people, of whom 6,600 are children under-five. (5 February 2019)

The warning, which follows years of violent unrest and vicious rights abuses linked to mass displacement, food shortages and disease outbreaks, coincides with the release of updated data on hunger levels in the country.

Yemen: Maternal and Newborn Health ‘On the Brink of Total Collapse’ – UNICEF

After more than four years of grinding conflict in Yemen, healthcare for mothers and their babies is “on the brink of collapse”, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned on Friday [14 June 2019], in a report that highlights the difficulties of childbirth and parenting in a war zone.

According to UNICEF, one woman and six newborns die every two hours from complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

Lebanon – Many Refugee Children Must Work to Feed Their Families

12 June 2019 (Norwegian Refugee Council)*— The war in Syria has deprived millions of children of their childhood and basic human rights. To mark World Day Against Child Labour, we spoke to 14-year-old Rida*, one of about 100,000 Syrian children living in Lebanon who has to work to provide for his family. Without him, his family in Syria would not be able to survive.
