UNCCD COP16 Spotlights Drought But Fails to Agree on a Legally Binding Protocol

RIYADH & HYDERABAD, Dec 17 2024 (IPS)* The 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 16) concluded early hours of Saturday with a renewed focus on building drought resilience globally.

US Backs Israel’s Land Grab in Syria

The US State Department framed Israel’s incursion into Syrian territory as ‘self-defense.’

Today [9 Dec 2024], the US State Department backed Israel’s seizure of territory in Syria that came after the collapse of the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, framing it as a defensive action.

Israel seized a buffer zone between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the rest of Syria’s territory that was established in 1974 and also captured several areas beyond the zone.
