(UN News)* — After 15 months of conflict in Ethiopia, almost 40 per cent of Tigrayans are suffering an extreme lack of food, according to data released by the World Food Programme (WFP) on Friday [28 January 2022].

Meanwhile, across all three conflict-affected regions of the north, more than nine million people now need humanitarian food assistance, the highest number so far, since conflict erupted in November 2020, between Government and rebel forces.

26 January 2022 (IWGIA)* — According to reliable information received by Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) and the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania is currently planning the eviction of the Maasai Indigenous people from a 1,500 km2 area in their ancestral land located in the Loliondo Division of Ngorongoro District, Arusha Region, east of the Serengeti National Park.

Hunger Hotspots Report from the World Food Programme (
WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (
FAO),
Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen remain the countries of highest concern.

According to the most recent assessments, all four countries had areas where people were experiencing, or projected to experience, starvation and death (
IPC Phase 5), requiring the most urgent attention.

Do our “Defense Departments” really defend us? Absolutely not! Their very title is a lie. The military-industrial complex sells itself by claiming to defend civilians. It justifies vast and crippling budgets by this claim; but it is a fraud.

For the military-industrial complex, the only goal is money and power. Civilians like us are just hostages. We are expendable. We are pawns in the power game, the money game.
Nations possessing nuclear weapons threaten each other with “Mutually Assured Destruction”, which has the very appropriate acronym MAD. What does this mean? Does it mean that civilians are being protected?
Not at all. Instead they are threatened with complete destruction. Civilians here play the role of hostages in the power games of their leaders.
