Bravo Trump – No to CIA!!

Human Wrongs Watch

 By Johan Galtung*

19 December 2016 – TRANSCEND Media Service – A President-Elect of the USA saying he wants no more intelligence briefings is like–like what?  Hearing a priest about to be ordained saying he needs no more, not Bible readings, words from God?

Whatever this “intelligence” may be is it intelligent?

Information about the “capability, intention and circumstances” of foreign (CIA) and domestic (FBI) actors: nothing wrong about that.

With a good balance between friendly and hostile intentions; 80-20? It sounds more like 1-99, though. Outer and inner worlds are scanned for threats of violence, not for opportunities of peace.

The focus is on security, not building cooperation. That may be done by conventional diplomacy–where does Trump stand on that? The US “intelligence community”–19 big organizations–looms higher.

To disregard threats damage a top politician more than to disregard opportunities.

Are There Human Rights Abuses in Your Seafood?

Human Wrongs Watch

By Anchalee Pipattanawattanakul*

16 December, 2016 (Greenpeace)* – Migrant workers from Cambodia and Myanmar are being used as forced labour in the Thai fishing industry. Using tricks of deception, non-binding verbal agreements and induced debt, these workers catch fish both for human consumption and the pet food industry.

Burmese workers sort freshly-landed fish at the public fishing port in Ranong, southern Thailand.

Now, a new report from Greenpeace Southeast Asia exposes how crackdowns on human rights abuse in the Thai fishing industry has forced vessels to operate further…decreasing their chances of being caught and continuing their illegal practices out of sight, out at sea.

Last year, the Associated Press exposed human rights violations in Thailand’s notorious fishing industry, sending shockwaves around the world.

Human Wrongs Watch

Human Wrongs Watch

By Dr Ravi P Bhatia*

12 December 2016 – TRANSCEND Media Service – our men had to go to their office on the 20th floor of a tall tower in a big city. When they reached the staircase they were disappointed to see that both the elevators were out of order. What to do?

They had to go to their office for some urgent work. One of the men said, ‘let us relate some stories or events in our lives and that way we will slowly climb up to our office’.

The other three agreed and it was decided that youngest of the four would start relating his story for the first 5 floors and the next older person the next five and so on.

The first man (let us call him A) said that we all need peace and happiness in our lives. The question is how should be obtain it?

‘Don’t Put Refugees in the Hands of Those Wishing to Turn Them into Scapegoats’

Human Wrongs Watch

The United Nations refugee agency on 5 December 2016 proposed far-reaching reforms of Europe’s management of refugees, including the asylum system, recalling that scenes of chaos at borders last year led to a breakdown in the public’s trust in the capacity of governments to manage the refugee challenge and played into the hands of those wishing to turn those fleeing for their lives into scapegoats.

In a paper presented to the European Union (EU), Protecting refugees in Europe and beyond: Can the EU rise to the challenge?, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) urged Europe to improve support, preparations, and response aspects of its engagement with the refugees.
