‘More than 100 Years after the First Large-Scale Use of Chemical Weapons in Battle, They Continue to Inflict Terror, Suffering and Death’

Human Wrongs Watch

Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare, 30 November

By António Guterres, United Nations Secretary General

More than one hundred years after the first large-scale use of chemical weapons in battle, they continue to inflict terror, suffering and death.

Recent years have seen the erosion of the taboo against chemical weapons, threatening the disarmament and non-proliferation regimes.

The use of chemical weapons anywhere, by anyone, under any circumstances, is intolerable and a serious violation of international law.

Impunity for their use is unacceptable.

The Race to Zero Emissions, and Why the World Depends on It

Human Wrongs Watch

30 November 2020 (UN News)* — A host of countries have recently announced major commitments to significantly cut their carbon emissions, promising to reach “net zero” in the coming years. The term is becoming a global rallying cry, frequently cited as a necessary step to successfully beat back climate change, and the devastation it is causing.
.
Maxime Pontoire | A person carrying a red sun brolly walks through a solar panel farm in France.
.

What is net zero and why is it important?

Put simply, net zero means we are not adding new emissions to the atmosphere. Emissions will continue, but will be balanced by absorbing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere.

Practically every country has joined the Paris Agreement on climate change, which calls for keeping the global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial era levels. If we continue to pump out the emissions that cause climate change, however, temperatures will continue to rise well beyond 1.5, to levels that threaten the lives and livelihoods of people everywhere.

Rising Hunger in Drought-Stricken Southern Madagascar Forcing Families to Eat Insects – World Food Programme

Human Wrongs Watch

(UN News)* — Hunger is on the rise in southern Madagascar due to consecutive years of drought,  affecting half the region’s population, or 1.5 million people, and forcing most families to eat insects, the World Food Programme (WFP) reported on Friday [27 November 2020].

WFP/Tsiory Andriantsoarana | The combined effects of the drought, COVID-19 and the insecurity upsurge have undermined the already fragile food security and nutrition situation of the population of southern Madagascar.
.
The figure is three times the number projected mid-year, with women and children comprising most of those experiencing “crisis” or “emergency” hunger conditions.

Overcoming the Digital Gap and Food Insecurity: a Complementary Target

Human Wrongs Watch

By Mario Lubetkin*

Mario Lubetkin is Assistant Director General at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

ROME, Nov 27 2020 (IPS)* – Overcoming the digital gap to face food insecurity with the use of artificial intelligence practices in agriculture is part of a growing debate that seeks to simultaneously safeguard natural resources and address the difficulties generated by climate change and the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Smart-629x385Digital technologies are changing agriculture and food systems. It is important to bridge the digital gap in this sector so that family farmers in developing countries are not left behind as food security depends on them. Credit: FAO.

The study was published in keeping with the following guiding principles suggested by the Committee:

“The study should place the problem in its historical perspective, emphasizing the national identity and rights of the Palestinian people. Renew Commitment to Palestinian People, UN Chief Urges, Marking International Day

Human Wrongs Watch

29 November 2020 (UN News)* — Commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to explore every opening to “restore hope” for a two-State solution.

In a message, the UN chief cautioned that prospects for a viable two-State solution are becoming “more distant”.

“A host of factors continue to cause great misery, including: the expansion of illegal settlements, a significant spike in the demolition of Palestinian homes and structures, violence and continued militant activity,” said Mr. Guterres.

Root Vegetables: Kenyan Schools Embrace Indigenous Foods

Human Wrongs Watch

18 November 2020 (UNEP)* — Today, when students file into the lunchroom at Mundika High School in western Kenya, they are greeted by a spread of nutritious local vegetables with exotic-sounding names, like spider plant. But that wasn’t always the case. Just a few years ago, that fare had largely disappeared from Kenyan plates, replaced by cheaper foreign-derived foods, like cabbage and maize meal.

“The first time we introduced indigenous African leafy vegetables in a school meal programme, we didn’t know how the students would respond,” said Aurillia Manjella, an agricultural consultant who helped Mundika high, and several other schools, integrate traditional foods into their menus.

Indigenous Peoples – Consultation or Non-Consultation: Here Lies the Dilemma

Human Wrongs Watch

By Frederica Barclay*

27 November 2020 (IWGIA)* — In Peru, the Bagua Massacre prompted the adoption of the ILO Convention 169 in response to local demands and international pressure. However, far from respecting the communities’ decision, this has led to simulations of consultations that prevent the Indigenous Peoples from exercising their right to autonomy and self-determination. The consultation process, as outlined by the State, has become a threat.

Photo: PUINAMUDTThe obligation of States to conduct processes of free, prior and informed consultation and to obtain the consent of the Indigenous or original peoples is a right established by Convention 169 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 1989 and was one of the major vindications enshrined in this global instrument.
