UNICEF Seeks $165 Million for Therapeutic Food to Combat ‘Silent Killer’

(UN News)* Nearly two million children suffering from severe wasting are at risk of death due to funding shortages for life-saving Ready-to-use-Therapeutic-Food (RUTF) to treat the condition, which is the most dangerous form of malnutrition.

The warning comes from UN children’s agency UNICEF which said levels of severe wasting in children under five remain gravely high in several countries due to conflict, economic shocks and climate crises.

Deadly condition

Severe wasting – also known as severe acute malnutrition – is caused by a lack of nutritious and safe foods and repeated bouts of disease, such as diarrhoea, measles and malaria.

In Haiti, hundreds, if not thousands, of children driven by rising hunger and severe poverty have joined criminal groups, where they are forced into illegal activities and face abuse, Human Rights Watch said today [9 October 2024].

A recent increase in criminal groups’ recruitment of children appears to be in response to the operations of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission and the Haitian National Police.

In the Lebanese capital, UN humanitarians reported “another night of strikes” and ongoing attacks, as aid workers continued trying to help all those in need. This was “despite their own families being displaced and searching for safety”, said the UN’s top humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza.

The warning on Thursday [3 October 2024] comes as the SAF launched a major offensive last month to regain control of key areas currently held by the RSF. The two armies led by rival generals have been locked in a brutal power struggle since April 2023.

BEIRUT, 26 September 2024 (UNICEF)* – The average number of children killed per day in Lebanon this week is more than double the number of children killed per day during the country’s devastating 2006 conflict.

An estimated 400 children, or about 12 children per day, were killed during the 33-day 2006 conflict[1].
