Human Wrongs Watch

By WHO Director-General on World Health Day 2019*

GENEVA, 6 April 2019 (WHO)*WHO was born on 7 April 1948 with a clear and ambitious vision: a world in which all people enjoy the highest attainable standard of health. Although we have made enormous progress in recent years against some of the world’s leading causes of death and disease, we still have a lot of work to do to realize that vision.

Human Wrongs Watch

By Bill Dahl*

3 April 2019 (Wall Street International)*Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump have several things in common. Netanyahu is currently facing the prospect of indictment on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Trump is facing numerous charges based upon the efforts of Congressional investigative committees, and investigations at both the State (New York) and federal levels. The allegations, which are still in the formative stages, indicate Trump has obstructed justice, committed campaign finance violations, and has abused his power while in office.

The United Kingdom vis-a-vis the European Union

Human Wrongs Watch

By Cristina Cabrejas Artola – TRANSCEND Media Service

In 1951 the Treaty of Paris was signed to form the political and economic integration of 6 European countries: West Germany, Italy, France and the Benelux. The treaty advocated stability in the continent giving birth to the European Coal and Steel Community.

At the time coal and steel were the main energy sources in Europe, but Britain refrained from signing the treaty.

Winston Churchill, the UK’s Prime Minister who had led Europe to victory defeating Nazi Germany in 1945, had already envisioned an alternative to coal.  In fact, Churchill had settled to transform the UK’s energy from coal to oil.

It was essential, therefore, to colonise the Middle East, a region that had recently been discovered to be rich in oil.

Britain’s political, financial and sovereign interests lied in Africa, Asia and now the Middle East. Britain’s  defence security, however, continued to be in the heart of Europe against the threat of the political ideology of Communism.

‘Protecting Migrants in Libya Must be Our Primary Focus’ – International Organization for Migration

Rome (IOM)* — With regard to its activities in Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) would like to clarify that we follow the UN position indicating that Libya cannot yet be considered a safe port.

IOM-logo-standinIOM in Libya is present at the disembarkation points to deliver primary assistance to migrants that have been rescued at sea.

However, following their disembarkation, migrants are transferred to detention centres under the responsibility of the Libyan Directorate for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM) over which the Organization has no authority or oversight.

The detention of men, women and children is arbitrary. The unacceptable and inhumane conditions in these detention centres are well documented, and IOM continues to call for alternative solutions to this systematic detention.
