UNITED NATIONS, Sep 13 2024 (IPS)* As the devastating 11-month-old conflict in Gaza keeps escalating, with over 41,000 mostly civilian killings, and more than 92,000 Palestinians injured –in retaliation for the 1,200 killings inside Israel last October– the Israelis continue to defy the United States which maintains its uninterrupted flow of heavy weapons to Tel Aviv.

Over 22,500 have suffered ‘life-changing injuries’ in Gaza

(UN News)* — More than 22,500 people – a quarter of those wounded in Gaza since Israel’s offensive began – have life-changing injuries, requiring rehabilitation services “now and for years to come”, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Thursday [].

These include severe limb injuries, amputations, spinal cord trauma, traumatic brain injuries and major burns.

In a statement released via his Spokesperson, Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the latest Israeli attack on a school serving as a shelter in Nuseirat on Wednesday [], which killed six staffers from the UN Palestine refugee agency, UNRWA, along with at least 12 others, including women and children.

Private Donations Boost UN Support for War-Torn Gaza

(UN News)* — From celebrities to civil society, a growing number of people around the world are providing unprecedented support for UNRWA, the UN agency supplying a lifeline to two million Palestinians trapped in war-torn Gaza.

UNRWA works every day to provide critical services across the Gaza Strip, including flour distribution to support the Gazan population.

Maasai Face Yet Another Violation of Their Rights in Tanzania in Their Ongoing Struggle

On 14 August [2024], Indigenous Peoples and rights activists came to find out that the Tanzanian government decided to exclude people from 11 wards composed of 25 villages and 96 sub-villages in Ngorongoro from voter registration, effectively denying more than 100,000 Maasai from their guaranteed democratic right to civic participation.

Rural Survival: Guardians of Mother Earth Saving Mau, Revitalizing Native Lands

Between 2001 and 2022, the Mau Forest’s deforestation resulted in the loss of about 533 square kilometers of tree cover. Now, a group of women, under the aegis of the Paran Women Group, are preparing to plant 100,000 saplings this rainy season in an effort to restore the forest.
