On The Edge Of A Global Revolution?

Human Wrongs Watch

By Tony Robinson – Pressenza

What do Bolivia, Iceland, Tunisia, Egypt and Spain all have in common? Given that they are famous respectively for; ladies in bowler hats, volcanoes, mosaics, pyramids and Rafael Nadal there seems to be little to connect these diverse countries, yet they are all undergoing the most radical forms of social revolution witnessed since the collapse of the Soviet Empire.

Kraków, 17/7/11 – It is quite likely though that, at least in the cases of Bolivia, Iceland and Spain, people around the world have no idea what’s going on. Let’s recap:

What Future For Iraq?

Human Wrongs Watch

The price of the U.S-led invasion and occupation of Iraq since 2003 —which is paradoxically called Operation Freedom for Iraq— is usually calculated in dollars. What about its human cost?

The following are just some facts about Iraqi youth and children according to UN reports:

Over 57% of youth are unemployed; enrolment in secondary education is only 21%, and around 700,000 children are not enrolled in primary school.

Afghanistan, The Worst Place To Be A Mother Or A Child

Human Wrongs Watch

In spite of U.S-led military invasion since 2001 to bring “enduring freedom” and democracy, about 50 women die in childbirth each day in Afghanistan; one in three is physically or sexually abused, and the average life expectancy of women is 44 year.

In addition, more than 85 percent of Afghan women are illiterate, while 70 % of school-age girls do not attend school for various reasons–conservative parents, lack of security, or fear for their lives.

On top of that, 41 % of these child deaths occur among newborn babies in the first month of life.

Up to 99 percent of child and maternal deaths occur in developing countries. The lives of 250,000 women and 5.5 million children could be saved each year.

Ending Nuclear Evil

Human Wrongs Watch

By Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate /ICAN*

Image: ICAN

‘No nuclear-armed country currently appears to be preparing for a future without these terrifying devices. In fact, all are squandering billions of dollars on modernization of their nuclear forces, making a mockery of UN disarmament pledges. If we allow this madness to continue, the eventual use of these instruments of terror seems all but inevitable.’

Annual Spending on Nuclear Weapons, Equivalent To UN Budget For 45 Years

Human Wrongs Watch

By Baher Kamal

Politicians, pushed by the “ward lords” — the military, spend over 90 billion dollars a year, from taxpayer’s pockets, on nuclear weapons. This figure amounts to the UN budget for 45 years, and to 3/4 of the total annual sum spent on development aid. The U.S. alone spends over 50 billion dollars annually–enough to meet the Millennium Development Goals on poverty alleviation.

The military’s nuclear game is anything but under control–there have been dozens of documented instances of the near-use of nuclear weapons as a result of miscalculation or accidents. Nuclear-armed submarines have collided underwater and nuclear-tipped missiles have shot out of storage silos. With thousands of weapons on alert, the risk of unintended use is alarmingly high.

Every One Spends 236 Dollars On Weapons; The Life Of An African Child Is Worth Just 16 !

HUMAN WRONGS WATCH

Military expenditure amounted to 1630 billion dollars in 2010, i.e, 236 dollars per person in the world. Meanwhile, UN asks for 16 dollars to save each one of the over two million children needing urgent life-saving actions if they are to survive in drought-affected countries in the Horn of Africa. Half a million could soon die or suffer long-lasting mental or physical damage. 32 millions dollars are needed to save their lives.

This what the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said referring to the urgent need to assist millions of children and women in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti, which are facing what is considered the worst crisis in more than  50 years.

25 Million Private ‘Warriors’ To Protect You.. And Kill You!

Human Wrongs Watch

They do not apply the Mexican joke “I kill people for money; but you, my best friend, I will kill you for nothing!”. They are the private “warriors” who always charge for their services.

Powerful militaries, key government agencies, large corporations and business and even individuals are increasingly outsourcing aspects of their security to private companies, which rely on a kind of private armies made of 20-25 million persons. Their growing and even dubious activities are poorly documented.

Small Arms Survey (SAS), an independent research project located at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, has prepared a study on this issue, attempting to shed light on a poorly documented aspect of the global private security industry: its use of arms.

Does Anyone Know Anything About A New Country Called South Sudan?

By Baher Kamal | Human Wrongs Watch

This is a standard practice–mainstream media mostly ‘tells about bleeding events such as wars and deadly attacks. But, what do we know about this new state?

South Sudan | Wikimedia Commons

Amazing UN: Horrific Massive Rapes “Could Be” Crimes Against Humanity!

Human Wrongs Watch

Image: RTEC

The UN says that rape is used as a weapon of war, and as a mean of terror to ensure the enslave-ment of civilians. Inspite of this clear definition of such horrific crime, the UN now says that the rapes of hundreds of people in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo“could be considered crimes against humanity and war crimes.”
