The Need for a New Economic System – PART I : Limits to Growth

Human Wrongs Watch

By John Scales Avery*

Introduction: The need for reform

The Industrial Revolution marked the start of massive human use of fossil fuels. The stored energy from several hundred million years of plant growth began to be used at roughly a million times the rate at which it had been formed. The effect on human society was like that of a narcotic.

There was a euphoric (and totally unsustainable) surge of growth of both population and industrial production.

Meanwhile, the carbon released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels began to duplicate the conditions which led to the 5 geologically-observed mass extinctions, during each of which more than half of all living species disappeared forever.

The Hidden Truth Behind the Greek Drama

Human Wrongs Watch

By Roberto Savio*

San Salvador, Bahamas, 24  July 2015

Greece was the civilization where drama and farce were established as forms of theatre. The negotiations with the Eurozone were a drama for the Greek people, and a farce for the European leaders. In fact, it is a dramatic for all, that this brings to an end of the most radical dream after the Second World War.

Roberto Savio

Let us see why. It will be a little long, but without examining a little history it is impossible to understand how we came to this situation.

The Media have been presenting the German-led diktat to Greece, as a cultural difference, between the hard working ant and the irresponsible grasshopper, from the Aesop’s tales, plus the work ethics of the Protestant north versus the Catholic south (Greeks are orthodox Catholics). Those are realities, but this leaves out important truths.

First of all, let’s recall that the euro was a political design, not an economic project. It came out of an agreement hashed out between Mitterrand and Kohl.

Israel, Iran and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Human Wrongs Watch

By John Scales Avery*

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1968

The During the Cold War, a number of international treaties attempting to reduce the global nuclear peril had been achieved after much struggle. Among these, the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has special importance.

The NPT was designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons beyond the five nations that already had them; to provide assurance that “peaceful” nuclear activities of non-nuclear-weapon states would not be used to produce such weapons; to promote peaceful use of nuclear energy to the greatest extent consistent with non-proliferation of nuclear weapons; and finally, to ensure that definite steps towards complete nuclear disarmament would be taken by all states, as well steps towards comprehensive control of conventional armaments (Article VI).

July 15, 2015 – The Euro-Summit ‘Agreement’ on Greece

The Euro Summit statement (or Terms of Greece’s Surrender – as it will go down in history) follows, annotated by yours truly. The original text is untouched with my notes confined to square brackets. Read and weep… [For a pdf copy click here.]

Euro Summit Statement Brussels, 12 July 2015

The Euro Summit stresses the crucial need to rebuild trust with the Greek authorities [i.e. the Greek government must introduce new stringent austerity directed at the weakest Greeks that have already suffered grossly] as a pre- requisite for a possible future agreement on a new ESM programme [i.e. for a new extend-and-pretend loan].

In this context, the ownership by the Greek authorities is key [i.e. the Syriza government must sign a declaration of having defected to the troika’s ‘logic’], and successful implementation should follow policy commitments.

‘Welcoming the Iran Nuclear Deal and Calling on Israel to Dismantle Its Nuclear Arsenal for a Nuclear-Free Middle East’

Human Wrongs Watch

By Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate*

20 july 2015, TRANSCEND Media Service – All Peace loving people around the World, and particularly those who have worked for many years for the Abolition of All Nuclear Weapons, must have been encouraged and given hope, with the announcement on 14 July, 2015 of a Nuclear Deal between Iran and the Six World Powers.

Mairead Maguire

Congratulations are in order to all those who persevered in face of much opposition and remained at the negotiating table to get this deal, Foreign Minister of Iran Mr. Zarif, USA Sec. of State, John Kerry, the EU High Rep. for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Mogherini, and many others fulfilled their political responsibilities in negotiating a Nuclear Deal with Iran, that according to Iranian Foreign Minister has delivered, not what everyone wanted, but a win/win situation for all.

This Agreement is indeed to be welcomed, and it is a triumph for dialogue and diplomacy and proves that problems can be solved at the negotiating table instead of using the unethical, immoral and counter-productive method of military threats and attacks.

Pentagon Chief to Israel: Iran Deal Is Good, Military Option Still on the Table

Human Wrongs Watch

20 July 2015 (RT)* – US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter wants to convince Israel that the Iran nuclear deal does not limit American options when it comes to the ally’s security. Carter has set out to meet Israeli officials, who have been staunchly opposed to the deal.

“One of the reasons this deal is a good one is that it does nothing to prevent the military option — the US military option, which I’m responsible for,” Carter told reporters aboard his plane while traveling to Tel Aviv.

Carter arrived in Israel on Sunday evening and is scheduled to meet with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

The Pentagon head stressed that his trip does not involve convincing Israel to like the deal, stating he’s “not going to change anybody’s mind in Israel. We can agree to disagree.”

The main thing he will try to get across is that nothing has really changed for the US: “Our ability to carry out that strategy is unchanged,” he said, adding that the goal is to ensure the security of Israel and US Arab allies.

The Treaty

Human Wrongs Watch

By Uri Avnery*

18 July 2015

AND WHAT if the whole drama was only an exercise of deception?

Uri Avnery

Uri Avnery

What if the wily Persians did not even dream of building an atomic bomb, but used the threat to further their real aims?

What if Binyamin Netanyahu was duped to become unwittingly the main collaborator of Iranian ambitions?

Sounds crazy? Not really. Let’s have a look at the facts.

IRAN IS one of the oldest powers in the world, with thousands of years of political experience. Once they possessed an empire that spanned the civilized world, including our little country. Their reputation for clever trade practices is unequaled.

They are much too clever to build a nuclear weapon. What for? It would devour huge amounts of money. They know that they would never be able to use it. Same as Israel, with its large stockpile.

Close Your Eyes and Imagine an Arctic Sanctuary

Human Wrongs Watch

By Sophie Allain*

This is a story about the frozen ocean at the top of our planet. It’s wild and untouched, and at the moment it’s owned by everyone and no-one. This is the Arctic high seas, the wild west of the high north, and our global commons.

But the sea ice is melting and soon the Arctic will be like other oceans for much of the year – open water exposed to exploitation and industry.

The resources that for thousands of years have been locked up by ice will soon become accessible, and the vultures are circling for the fish and oil.

Why Social Protection Holds the Key to Fighting HungerSurce

UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlights 5 positive impacts of social protection measures.*

Source: FAO

What happens when money is given directly to people living in dire conditions? Will children be better nourished? Will families be more productive or will they become dependent? Will economies grow stronger?

Today, some 70 percent of the world population, most of which live in rural areas, have no access to adequate social protection measures.
