Ethiopia Experiencing ‘Worst Drought in 30 Years Due to El Niño – UN Report

27 October 2015 – Ethiopia is experiencing its worst drought in 30 years according to the United Nations, with levels of acute need across all humanitarian sectors having already exceeded levels seen in the Horn of Africa drought of 2011, and which are projected to become far more severe in 2016.

A recent report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that the impact of the failed spring rains was compounded by the arrival of the El Niño weather conditions that weakened summer rains, which feed 80 to 85 per cent of the country.

“This greatly expanded food insecurity, malnutrition and devastated livelihoods across six affected regions of the country,” OCHA indicated.

Violence in Israel has reached new dizzying heights, so much so that hateful mobs have turned on their own, soldiers have shot their own nationals over mistaken identity and settlers have targeted a Rabbi for daring to preach tolerance and compassion for all.

SOMETIMES, A small incident can pierce the darkness and reveal a frightening picture.

This happened last Sunday in Beersheba, the capital of the Negev.

The picture was frightening indeed.

THE INCIDENT started as a routine attack, one of many we have become used to in recent weeks. Some call it “the Third Intifada”, some speak of a “Terror Wave”, some are satisfied with “Escalation”.

It is a new stage in the old conflict. Its symbol is the knife-wielding lone Palestinian individual – either from East Jerusalem, the West Bank or Israel proper.

It is not connected with any of the Palestinian parties. Before the deed, the attacker had no known connection with any militant group. He or she is completely unknown to the Israeli Security Service. Hence it is impossible to prevent such actions.

From European Union to Just a Common Market

ROME, 23 October 2015 – The success in the recent Swiss elections of the UDC-SVP, a xenophobic, anti European Union, right wing party, opens a number of reflections.

Seventy years ago Europe came out from a terrible war, exhausted and destroyed.

That produced a generation of statesman, who went about creating a European integration, in order to avoid the repetition of the internal conflicts that had created the two world wars.

Today a war between France and Germany is unthinkable, and Europe is an island of peace for the first time in its history.

This is the mantra we hear all the time. What is forgotten is that in fact a good part of Europe did not want integration.

In 1960, the United Kingdom led the creation of an alternative institution, dedicated only to commercial exchange: the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), formed by the United Kingdom, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, then later Finland and Iceland.

It was only in 1972 that, bowing to the success of European integration, the UK and Denmark asked to join the EU. Later, Portugal and Austria left EFTA to join the European Union.

AUGUSTINE, Florida, Oct 20 2015 (IPS) – The year 2015 highlights the global shift from traditional money-based, gross domestic product (GDP)-measured economic growth to the new models of sustainable, inclusive human development embodied in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ratified by its 193 member nations.

This historic shift still involves ideological and political struggles between incumbent industries of the earlier Industrial Revolution and the disruptive forces and technologies of our succeeding Information Age.

The battles continue between the fossilized economic and financial sectors and those rising in the knowledge-richer technologies and cleaner, greener companies based on efficiency, renewable energy and “shareconomies.”

Non, Merci! Why Refugees Avoid France

While Germany expects to receive up to one million asylum seekers by the end of 2015, France is preparing for only 65,000, the same number it received last year.

Paris, 20 October 2015 (IRIN)* – Just a few years ago, France had among the highest number of claims in Europe, but its lack of accommodation and support for asylum seekers as well as long wait times for applications to be processed have make it a less attractive option for many refugees.

Mohammad Salah, a 28-year-old from Sudan, arrived in France a year and a half ago.

“I dropped off my request for asylum 13 months ago, and I’m still waiting for the answer,” he told IRIN. “First I stayed in a hotel, but after four months I ran out of money, I started to sleep in the street and joined other migrants in camps.”

While the UK media fixates on the sprawling camps on the outskirts of Calais filled with migrants hoping to cross the Channel, the French capital is dealing with a lesser-known crisis of homeless asylum seekers.

What’s worse, this no act of nature. The Indigenous Peoples of this area, the Guajajara, claim that the fires are caused by loggers in retaliation for the Guajajara’s work to combat their illegal logging activities.

First Nine Months of 2015 Hottest on Record – World Meteorological Organization

Earth has just had the hottest January-September on record, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 26 October 2015 said, adding that the average air and sea temperatures in September logged the greatest rise above monthly average in the 136-year historical record.

According to a press release from WMO, the Global Climate Report from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the globally averaged air temperature over land and sea surface temperature for September was 0.90°C (1.62°F) above the 20th century average temperature.

Record warmth was observed across much of South America and parts of Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

Itaborai, a City of White Elephants and Empty Offices

ITABORAÍ, Brazil , 23 October 2015 (IPS) – Itaboraí still recalls its origins as a sprawling city that sprang up along a highway, not far from Rio de Janeiro. But a few years ago big modern buildings began to sprout all over this city in southeast Brazil, whose offices and shops are almost all empty today.

All of the offices, shops and locales in the modern two-building Enterprise complex are empty. It is one of the many white elephants left in the city of Itaboraí, in southeast Brazil, by the state-run Petrobras’ aborted petrochemical and oil industry megaproject. Credit: Mario Osava/IPS

The number of white elephants, or costly, useless constructions, in this city of 230,000 people was the result of “two huge shocks” caused by the Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (COMPERJ), Luiz Fernando Guimarães, the municipal secretary of economic development, told IPS.
