We were there, walking with thousands from Champs-Élysées to Place Etoile where a stentorian voice commanded us to sit in small groups in the circles under the Arch to “discuss the situation”.  So we did.

France is now suffering from more imagination deficit than ever.  To call Le Pen-Front National “extreme right” when the issue is for or against the EU is not helpful; left-right was 20th century politics.

Why not think bigger, beyond EU: for or against EURASIA, Russia-China are ready?

South Sudan, ‘World’s Fastest Growing Refugee Crisis’

The United Nations refugees and food relief agencies on 15 May 2017 urged donors to step up support for people fleeing crisis-hit South Sudan as the 1.4 billion dollars response plan remains 86 per cent unfunded.

“Bitter conflict and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in South Sudan are driving people from their homes in record numbers,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, in a news release jointly issued by his office (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

Small and Medium Enterprises ‘World’s Most Powerful Job Creators’

“These enterprises are among the world’s most powerful job creators, drivers of productivity, and agents of growth globally. We simply cannot achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) without the support and leadership from such enterprises worldwide,” the UN Secretary-General’s Chef de Cabinet, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, said.

World Migratory Bird Day – The Common Destiny for Wildlife and People

10 May 2017 – A healthy planet for migratory birds means a healthy plant for people, as they share the habitats on the Earth, the heads of two United Nations-backed environmental treaties said, marking World Migratory Bird Day.

“If we commit ourselves to sustainable development and preserve the habitats that we share with migratory birds, both wildlife and people will benefit, because their future is our future,” said the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), Bradnee Chambers.

Initiated in 2006, the World Day is celebrated each year to highlight the need for international cooperation to conserve migratory birds and their habitats for the benefit of mankind.

Buddha’s Message of Compassion ‘Timeless’ – UN Chief on international Day

10 May 2017 – Observing the Day of Vesak, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on the global community to draw inspiration from the journey of Lord Buddha and embrace his message of compassion.

“Born a sheltered prince, Shakyamuni went out into the world to confront and overcome human suffering,” said the Secretary-General in his message on the occasion. “This message of compassion is timeless,” he said.

Vesak, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world.

Nigeria: UN Urges Support to Rehabilitate, Reintegrate Chibok Abducted Schoolgirls

Welcoming Saturday’s (6 May) release of 82 of the schoolgirls abducted from the Nigerian town of Chibok by the Boko Haram insurgent group three years ago, the United Nations has called for continued global support for the country’s efforts to release, rehabilitate and reintegrate all Boko Haram victims.

“We appeal to all Nigerians, including the families and local communities of the liberated girls, to fully embrace them and provide all necessary support to ensure their reintegration into society,” said a statement issued today by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

Mediterranean: Coast Guard on Alert after Shipwrecks as Smugglers Take Advantage of Calm Waters

9 May 2017 – About 6,600 migrants and refugees were rescued in the past few days trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, United Nations authorities have said, as rescuers are on the lookout for up to 245 people missing after two shipwrecks this weekend.

“Rescue at sea operations, including by the Italian Coast Guard, in coordination with Frontex, and by [non-governmental organizations] are of crucial importance,” Cécile Pouilly, a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), today told journalists in Geneva.

African Migrants Bought and Sold Openly in ‘Slave Markets’ in Libya

ROME, May 9 2017 (IPS) – Hundreds of migrants along North African migration routes are being bought and sold openly in modern day ‘slave markets’ in Libya, survivors have told the United Nations migration agency, which warned that these reports “can be added to a long list of outrages” in the country. The International Criminal Court is now considering investigating.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) had already sounded the alarm after its staff in Niger and Libya documented over the past weekend shocking testimonies of trafficking victims from several African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana and the Gambia. They described ‘slave markets’ tormenting hundreds of young African men bound for Libya.
