Austerity Is Stupid, and Why the Powerful Don’t Like to Admit It

We need a Progressive International whose narrative deeply penetrates this warped version of reality.

23 December 2018 (openDemocracy)*The poet Fernando Pessoa taught us that no stupid idea can gain general acceptance unless some intelligence is mixed in with it. So how can it be that austerity appears to have been generally accepted?

Infinite Human Resources – Fulfilled Lives, Shattered Lives

Human Wrongs Watch

By Vera Felicidade de Almeida Campos*

24 December 2018 (Wall Street International)*Every human being has resources, that is, specific qualities that allow to establish realization of possibilities and satisfaction of needs. In this sense, resources are infinite and become synonymous with possibilities. It turns out that everything that exists is evidenced in contexts – in situations that structure limits and conditions -, consequently generating obstacles as much as releases.

As American as Cherry Pie…

Human Wrongs Watch

By Martha R. Bireda*

25 December 2018 (Wall Street International)*In government offices across the nation can be found an “Active Shooter Event Reference Guide.” This helpful pamphlet is courtesy of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The guide describes an active shooter as “an individual attempting to kill people in a confined or populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.”

Yes, it has come to the point where the entirety of American society must fear and protect itself from other Americans.
.
That it has come to this is no surprise to those who know and understand U.S. history.

Twenty years ago, a small delegation organized by Voices in the Wilderness lived in Baghdad while U.S. cruise missiles attacked more than 100 targets in Iraq.

Following four days of bombing, known as “Operation Desert Fox,” our group visited various Iraqis who had survived direct hits.

One young girl handed me a large missile fragment, saying “Merry Christmas.”

Understanding Right and Left Populisms

Human Wrongs Watch

Neoliberal globalization has increased both economic insecurity and cultural anxiety. Have theories of populism taken adequate account of such insecurity – key to understanding the difference between right and left populisms?

We appear to be living in an age of populism. Over the past two decades, we have witnessed the rise of right-wing populist parties throughout Europe such as Haider’s Freedom Party in Austria, Victor Orban’s Fidesz Party in Hungary, and the Polish Law and Justice Party. Today, the Five-Star Movement is in the process of negotiating a coalition arrangement with the far-right Liga Nord.

The Relationship between Life and Humankind – Is Life, Peace and Security a Paradox of Humanity?

Human Wrongs Watch

By Antonio Vergara Meersohn*

10 December 2018 (Wall Street International)* For the first time ever in our history, we pose the crucial problem of the relationship between life and humankind as a dichotomy that we have not been able to settle or, what is even worse, where they appear more and more distant from each other.

Is such a dichotomy just apparent, circumstantial? Or it is instead evident and substantial? Does it touch the very essence of existence, including our lives in this paradise – which is being manipulated and mistreated – that is called Earth? From what reference points or subjective perspectives are we going to face this issue?.

According to the UN human rights office (OHCHR), although there have been different versions on the sequence of events which led to her death, and the overall health status of seven-year-old Jakelin Ameí Caal, it is not disputed that she died while in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection, after crossing from Mexico, with her father and a larger group of migrants.

24 December 2018 (openDemocrcay)* — At the end of 2003 the United States-led war in Iraq was going badly wrong. It had started so well from the Pentagon’s perspective, as American troops entered Baghdad within weeks of launching the invasion in late March.
