On International Widow’s Day, marked on Sunday 22 June 2019, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is asking everyone to reflect on the “economic hardship and increased vulnerability” of these bereaved women and ensure “they are not left out or left behind”.
UN Women/Ryan Brown | A 38-year-old widow who lost her husband in the Central African Republic war escaped to the Ngam refugee site in the Adamawa region of Cameroon with her five children; one of whom recently died.

In the “absence of social and legal protection”, he said in his message, “widowed women’s lifetime earnings and savings are often too little to avoid poverty”.

20 June 2019 (UNHCR)* – A group of 131 refugees were evacuated last night out of Libya to the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM) in Niger, run by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. | Español | Français | عربي

The evacuees were from Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan, and included 65 children under the age of eighteen. Some of the group were previously held in detention centres for more than a year.

I have children to feed and a sick mother to care for.” Hussein al-Najjar is a 40-year-old Palestine refugee from Gaza and was working as a construction labourer before Israel imposed the blockade on Gaza. He is solely responsible for his family of nine, which includes his wife, six children and his ailing mother who requires constant care.
