There are vast inequalities across countries, and among the poorer segments of societies, says a new UN report published on Thursday 11 July 2019.

The 2019 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), shows that, in the 101 countries studied – 31 low income, 68 middle income and 2 high income – 1.3 billion people are “multidimensionally poor” (which means that poverty is defined not simply by income, but by a number of indicators, including poor health, poor quality of work and the threat of violence).

“Trauma from terrorism” hurts families, communities and destabilizes entire regions, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on 10 July 2019, as he expressed solidarity with victims of extremist attacks in Africa.

Speaking in Nairobi at the opening of a conference on counter-terrorism, Mr. Guterres recalled how attackers had laid siege to a hotel complex in the capital in January, killing 21 people.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrives in the southern African nation of Mozambique on Thursday 10 July 2019 for a two-day visit, he will be surveying the damage wrought by the deadly back-to-back cyclones earlier this year. UN News reports from the ground, on some of the extraordinary stories of loss, courage, survival and recovery, that have defined the months since then.
