131 Refugees Evacuated Out of Libya to Niger, amidst Ongoing Conflict in Tripoli

20 June 2019 (UNHCR)* – A group of 131 refugees were evacuated last night out of Libya to the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM) in Niger, run by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. | Español | Français | عربي

The evacuees were from Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan, and included 65 children under the age of eighteen. Some of the group were previously held in detention centres for more than a year.

Nigeria Turns the Tide on Electronic Waste

The Nigerian Government, the Global Environment Facility and UN Environment have announced a $15-million initiative to kick off a circular electronics system in Nigeria.
Up to 100,000 people work in the informal electronic waste sector in Nigeria, processing half a million tonnes of discarded appliances every year.
Safe e-waste recycling has enormous economic potential, with 100 times more gold in a tonne of e-waste than in a tonne of gold ore.

I have children to feed and a sick mother to care for.” Hussein al-Najjar is a 40-year-old Palestine refugee from Gaza and was working as a construction labourer before Israel imposed the blockade on Gaza. He is solely responsible for his family of nine, which includes his wife, six children and his ailing mother who requires constant care.

I just came to this world to find myself a displaced person.

Teachers Need More Training to Support Traumatized Refugee and Migrant Students UNESCO on World Refugee Day

On World Refugee Day, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is calling for more support to fill the gaps in training for teachers on trauma and psychosocial assistance for migrant and refugee students.

On 1 October 2018 at the Junaina makeshift camp in northern rural Idlib, in the Syrian Arab Republic, girls study in a tent school where a total of 350 children between the ages of 7 and 14 are able to go back to learning.

Persistent Threat of War Erodes Prospects for Middle East Peace, Senior UN Envoy Warns

Developments in the Middle East cannot be divorced from Israel’s military occupation of Palestinian territory and settlement-building, or Hamas’ hold over Gaza and its militant activity, a senior United Nations envoy told the Security Council on Thursday [20 June 2019], warning that these actions “collectively erode the prospects of a two-State solution”.*

21 June 2019 (Other News)* — Social Democrats, who had been steadily disappearing following the crisis of 2008, have been making a small comeback in the last year. Now they are in power in Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Finland and, most recently, in Denmark.

But the statistics are daunting. The recent European elections gave members of the Socialist group 20% of the vote, against 25% in 2014, and the erosion from the 34% achieved in 1989 and 1994 is clear.

The latest success, in Denmark, with 25.9% of the vote, was lower than in 2015. In Finland, they received 17.7% of the vote, just two-tenths more than the Alt-Right.

And in Sweden, Stefan Löfven won his mandate with the lowest vote in decades. In countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy, they are becoming irrelevant.
