Kids United Sings against Child Labour

French youth music group, Kids United New Generation, has lent their voices to the ILO’s global campaign to end child labour. Their latest song highlights the urgent need to take action and calls on governments and organizations around the world to do more. español | français | Türkçe

GENEVA, 20 November 2020  (ILO)* – The French musical group, Kids United New Generation , have joined the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) campaign to end child labour.

The singers have dedicated their latest song, Take a Stand, to the UN International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour , scheduled for 2021.

The new song highlights the urgent need to take action to address the problem and calls on governments and organizations around the world to do more.

Children across the region have been asked what they want to be when they grow up as part of a UN photography exhibition entitled “One Day, I will” and while their hopes may match those of other young people around the world, their opportunities, after fleeing their homes, are perhaps more limited.

This World Children’s Day, ‘Reimagine a Better Future’, for Every Child

In a joint message, President of the European Parliament David Sassoli and UNICEFExecutive Director Henrietta Fore called for urgent investment to protect children’s futures.

As the world responds to the COVID-19 pandemic, “the rights of every child everywhere, need to come first in any recovery plan”, they stated.

To mark World Children’s Day, which is 20 November, the United Nations Environment Programme recreated the journey of one young girl as she learns about the value of the natural world and how to protect it.

Above Normal Temperatures and Precipitation Are Expected across Most of the Arctic Region for November-January 2020/2021

20 November 2020 (WMO)*Above normal temperatures and precipitation are expected across most of the Arctic region for  November-January 2020/2021, according to a new seasonal climate outlook produced at the 6th session of Arctic Climate Forum.

This follows above average summer surface air temperatures for most of the Arctic domain, with Eastern Siberia observing record-breaking temperatures and wildfires.. Arctic sea ice minimum extent after the summer melt – a key climate change indicator – was the second lowest on the satellite record after 2012.

Heartbreaking Stories from Refugees Fleeing Ethiopia Violence

(UN News)* — In a briefing to journalists on Thursday [19 November 2020], a senior UN humanitarian official in Sudan recounted moving testimony from refugees who are crossing the border from Ethiopia in their thousands, fleeing fighting in Tigray province.

“Many of the refugees left behind children, and parents. They did not have time to assemble their families and leave together”, said Babacar Cissé, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan.

“They arrived at the camps after having walked for several days, exhausted and with nothing. Seeing families and children sleeping in the open was heartbreaking”.

Many of the refugees are young men, who told UN staff that they had been targeted by armed fighters.

Countries Commit to Restore Up to 1 Billion Hectares of Land Lost to Development, an Area the Size of China

19 November 2020 (UNEP)* — Countries have committed to restoring up to 1 billion hectares of land lost to development, an area roughly the size of China, according to a new study released ahead of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).

If implemented, the commitments made under various international agreements could go a long way to addressing climate change, land degradation and biodiversity loss as well as achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including those on dignified work, and food and water security.

‘People, Plants and Animals around the World Are Dying from Untreatable Infections Due to a Rise in Antimicrobial Resistance’

(UN News)* — People, plants and animals around the world are dying from untreatable infections – even with the best medicines available – due to a rise in antimicrobial resistance, the UN food agriculture agency said on Wednesday [18 November 2020], kicking off World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.

WHO/S. Ramo | WHO says that there are not enough antibacterial treatments in clinical development worldwide to fight the growing threat of drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Antimicrobial medicines, including antibiotics, have long been overused and misused, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which added that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is “spreading further and faster every day”.
