27 October 2020 (IPS)* — As the coronavirus pandemic has led to decreased incomes and increased food prices across the southern African nation — it is estimated that more than 8 million Zimbabweans will need food aid until the next harvest season in March — Sibanda’s utilisation of traditional and indigenous food resources could provide a solution to food security here.

The ultimate geopolitical game-changer: one AI to rule them all
27 October 2020 (Wall Street International)* — The huge Covid-19 storm is undoubtedly still at its peak since it appeared at the beginning of 2020. The full economic, social and also technological effects are not totally visible yet (although we can enumerate some of them at least in the IT field such as the enforcement of remote distance learning/working, the huge expansion of streaming services, deep corona fakes, stronger phishing and malware campaigns, the new 5G network, etc..) but in any case, they will be tremendous.

Nairobi, 26 October 2020 (UNEP)* — Millions of used cars, vans and minibuses exported from Europe, the United States and Japan to the developing world are of poor quality, contributing significantly to air pollution and hindering efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, according to a new report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The report shows that between 2015 and 2018, 14 million used light-duty vehicles were exported worldwide. Some 80 per cent went to low- and middle-income countries, with more than half going to Africa.

Why the 2020 Election Is So Important

John Scales Avery
Here is a quotation from Bernie Sanders:
“Donald Trump is a pathological liar. According to documented reports he has told more than 20,000 lies and distortions since he has been president. This is, obviously, deeply disturbing behavior for anyone who is president of the United States.
“But what is even more disturbing is that Trump is now using his lies and misinformation to sow confusion and chaos in the election process and undermine American democracy. In other words, he does not intend to accept the results of the election if he loses and leave office voluntarily. This is not just a constitutional crisis. This is a threat to everything this country stands for.

NEW YORK and SUSSEX, Oct 16 2020 (IPS)* – This week the world’s Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors meet virtually at the 2020 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and decide on the fate of the world. | En español

Isabel Ortiz
This year’s gathering is particularly important, given that the world is confronting an unprecedented crisis. Governments are struggling to finance emergency care and urgent socioeconomic support to cope with the COVID19 pandemic.
While these short-term expenditures are necessary, countries need more than intensive care units, respirators, tests and emergency support. Governments must continue to invest in long-term public health, universal social protection floors, employment-generating activities and other sustainable development goals.

21 October 2020 (UNEP)* — Rice is a staple for more than
3.5 billion people, including most of the world’s poor. But it can be a problematic crop to farm. It requires massive amounts of water and the paddies in which it grows emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

To tackle such issues, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been working with the Shanghai Agrobiological Gene Center to develop strains of rice that are drought resistant and don’t need to be planted in paddies.

Potential Consequence of Failure to Adhere to Universal Principles of Intelligent Life

Anthony Judge
Introduction
In the midst of a global pandemic widely framed as a war, there is a strong case for recognizing both the civilian fatalities and those whose lives are at stake on a daily basis — in order to reduce the risk to greater numbers of humans.
Humans are called upon by authorities to take shelter in their homes to avoid any risk (Cowering for One’s Country in the War against Coronavirus, 2020).
It is therefore appropriate to honour those — effectively “on the front line” — who are dying in far greater numbers in the hope of ending the pandemic as soon as possible. As in conventional warfare, they have little choice in performing this duty, having been conscripted and trained to that end.
