A History of The Earth

Human Wrongs Watch

I would like to announce the publication of a new book, in which I have tried to sketch human history, from earliest times until the present, against a cosmic backdrop.

The place of humans in nature

According to modern cosmology, the universe is almost unimaginably vast. It is estimated that there are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the observable universe. Of these, many stars have planets on which life is likely to have developed. Thus our earth and its life forms are by no means unique.

We cannot claim to be “the center of the universe” with any unique justification. However, the earth is our home. It is important to us. As parents, we wish for and work for the survival of our children and grandchildren, and for all future generations of humans.

Coronavirus Could Push More People to Move out of Necessity as Hunger Surges among Migrant and Displaced Communities – New UN Report

Human Wrongs Watch

Geneva/Rome, 11 November 2020 (IOM)*  – A new report has found global hunger and population displacement  – both already at record levels when COVID-19 struck – could surge as people on the move and those reliant on a dwindling flow of remittances desperately seek work to support their families.

Who Lives and Who Dies?

Human Wrongs Watch

Who tells the truth and who lies?

American presidential election

11 November 2020 (Wall Street International)* — I am writing this article a few days prior to the American presidential election. By the time you read these words, that very same election will one way or the other be history. Surely, no matter the outcome, it will be the subject of extreme contention. We Americans can anticipate the likely intervention of the newly unbalanced Supreme Court.

Trump’s “America First” Foreign Policy Faces an Unceremonious Burial

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 11 2020 (IPS)* – The ouster of Donald Trump from the US presidency last week may well be the dawn of a new era for multilateralism – and perhaps for a besieged United Nations— after nearly four years of misguided political rhetoric emerging from the White House.

As a hard-core unilateralist, Trump was openly antagonistic towards multilateral institutions and contemptuous of the world body.

UN Agency for Palestine Refugees Runs Out of Money as COVID-19 Spreads

Human Wrongs Watch

By UN News*

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA) has run out of cash on hand to keep vital services going amid the worsening health emergency, UNRWA spokesperson Tamara Alrifai told a regular UN press briefing in Geneva on Tuesday [10 November 2020].

UNRWA/Yazan Fares | Back-to-school ceremony on 1 September 2020 at the UNRWA Nuzha school in Jordan.

“Despite the immense efforts to raise sufficient funds in 2020 to maintain UNRWA’s critical services to 5.7 million Palestinian refugees across the Middle East, as of yesterday November 9, UNRWA has run out of money”, Ms. Alrifai said.

Trump Is Gone, But Trumpism Remains

Human Wrongs Watch

By Roberto Savio | Other News*

11 November 2020 — Now it is clear that Joe Biden is the new president of the United States. It is unlikely that Donald Trump’s legal manoeuvring will change the election results, as when a conservative Supreme Court in 2000 decided in favour of George Bush over Al Gore, who lost by 535 votes.

Even this Supreme Court, where Trump has six sympathetic members (three appointed by him, quite a record), and only three unsympathetic, will dare to change a result coming from too many states.

Trump is gone, but it is sad to say, Trumpism is here to stay. But is that a specific situation of the United States, or is it a more general phenomenon? We think that, in an era of globalisation, we should attempt a global analysis.

This will leave out a zillion of facts, events and analysis, but this is now the destiny of journalism. Anyone can add what they think is relevant and decide what has been left out. This will be a big improvement over this abridged analysis.

Crude Impact: Cleaning Up the Ravages of War in Iraq

Each year, 06 November marks the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. We report on one of the biggest challenges facing UNEP and its partners – the post-war clean-up of Iraq.

9 November 2020 (UNEP)* — Vast jet-black plumes of smoke curling upwards into the sky, blocking out the sun. Crude oil flowing through the streets.  These were some of the environmental footprints left by ISIL/Da’esh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) in northern and western Iraq.

Oil wells and mineral stockpiles were torched, particularly during the Mosul offensive in the spring of 2016. Water barrages were blown up. So thick were the clouds of smoke that for the inhabitants day became night.

‘There Are Fewer Grounds Today than in the Past to Deplore a North–South Divide in Research and Innovation’

Human Wrongs Watch

(UNESCO)* — There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North–South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 launched on 10 November 2015.

For two decades now, the UNESCO Science Report has been mapping science, technology and innovation (STI) governance around the world on a regular basis. The report is published every five years, on 10 November, to mark World Science Day for Peace and Development.

Since STI do not evolve in a vacuum, this latest edition summarizes the evolution since 2010 against the backdrop of socio-economic, geopolitical and environmental trends that have helped to shape contemporary STI policy and governance.

It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.
