Raising the Voices and Needs of Indigenous Women in Africa and Asia

Human Wrongs Watch

By IWGIA*Indigenous women all over the world suffer from triple discrimination as they are not only discriminated simply for being women or for being indigenous, but also for being indigenous women. Indigenous women are often not only left out of local and national political processes but are also excluded from decision-making processes and structures within indigenous communities.

From the Middle of the World to the End of the World – Ecuadorians Revolt against President Lenin Moreno’s Austerity Measures

Human Wrongs Watch

18 October 2019 (Wall Street International)*  —  As its very name suggests, Ecuador is geographically located in the middle of the world. And now, from all appearances, neoliberalism has decided to carry out its end-of- the-world maneuvers in this country. That is perhaps the reason it is coming to the realization that the Ecuadorean people is a tough, if not impossible obstacle to overcome.

As everyone knows these days, neoliberalism’s deep interconnectedness with the interests of finance capital makes it the most antisocial version of global capitalism.

The Struggle for Peace in Afghanistan

Human Wrongs Watch

By Robert J. Burrowes*

8 October 2019 (Wall Street International)*I have just read a superb book by Mark Isaacs, an Australian who has documented several years of effort by a group of incredibly committed young people in Afghanistan to build peace in that war-torn country the only way it can be built: by learning, living and sharing peace.

The book, titled The Kabul Peace House: How a Group of Young Afghans are Daring to Dream in a Land of War records in considerable detail the struggle, both internal and external, to generate a peaceful future in Afghanistan.

‘A Region on the Move’: Over 8 Million Remain Internally Displaced in East and Horn of Africa

Nairobi,  October 2019 (IOM)*  –  Over half of all movements observed in the first six month of 2019 through flow monitoring in the East and Horn of Africa (EHoA) were motivated by economic reasons, and yet over 8 million people remain internally displaced. This is according to a new edition of ‘A Region on the Move’, a report that provides an analysis of the mixed migration movement trends affecting the region.

UN’s 75th Anniversary Shadowed by Right-Wing Nationalism, Widespread Authoritarianism and Budgetary Cuts

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 17 2019 (IPS)* When the six much-ballyhooed high-level UN meetings concluded late September, there were mixed feelings about the final outcomes.

UN-Anniversary_

And civil society organizations (CSOs), who were mostly disappointed with the results, are now gearing themselves for two upcoming key climate summit meetings: COP25 in Santiago, Chile in December and COP26 in Glasgow, UK in late 2020, along with the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Women’s Conference scheduled to take place in September 2020 in New York.

But perhaps the most politically-significant event in 2020 will be the 75th anniversary of the United Nations which will take place amidst continued threats against multilateral institutions, rising right-wing nationalism, growing authoritarianism and widespread disinformation.
