Unless political actors in Guinea-Bissau demonstrate renewed good faith to hold “genuinely free and fair elections,” the country is set to face a continuous cycle of instability, the United Nations Security Council warned on 27 December 2018.

 In a statement, the 15-member Security Council expressed “regret” that the country did not hold elections as planned on 18 November and voiced “deep concern” over preparations for the polls, now scheduled for 10 March 2019.

Climate Change: Fighting Drought in Somalia with Sand Dams

25 December 2018 — The construction of sand dams which retain water above and below sand bars, is improving access to water supplies for people in Somalia as the country continues to weather periods of damaging drought.

Parts of the Horn of Africa nation have not received rain for three consecutive years and, as a result, crops and livestock have perished.

Many fear a repeat of the 2011 famine in which nearly 260,000 people died.

Twenty years ago, a small delegation organized by Voices in the Wilderness lived in Baghdad while U.S. cruise missiles attacked more than 100 targets in Iraq.

Following four days of bombing, known as “Operation Desert Fox,” our group visited various Iraqis who had survived direct hits.

One young girl handed me a large missile fragment, saying “Merry Christmas.”

We appear to be living in an age of populism. Over the past two decades, we have witnessed the rise of right-wing populist parties throughout Europe such as Haider’s Freedom Party in Austria, Victor Orban’s Fidesz Party in Hungary, and the Polish Law and Justice Party. Today, the Five-Star Movement is in the process of negotiating a coalition arrangement with the far-right Liga Nord.

UN Human Rights Expert Urges Full Investigation into Death of Migrant Girl Held in US

24 December 2018 – A United Nations rights expert has called for a thorough investigation into the death of a Guatemalan migrant child, while she was in the custody of United States immigration authorities.

According to the UN human rights office (OHCHR), although there have been different versions on the sequence of events which led to her death, and the overall health status of seven-year-old Jakelin Ameí Caal, it is not disputed that she died while in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection, after crossing from Mexico, with her father and a larger group of migrants.

Conflict in Cameroon’s Anglophone Regions Forces 430,000 People to Flee

19 December 2018 (NRC Norwegian Refugee Council)*The number of people displaced as a result of the crisis in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions has spiked to more than 430,000 during the last months. Many people are hiding in the bush with no support, warns the Norwegian Refugee Council.

“We are deeply worried by the ongoing conflict and the increasing displacement figures. Parties to the conflict must ensure that civilians in the area are protected and are able to safely access life-saving assistance,” said David Manan, Country Director for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Cameroon.

The number of people displaced from their homes in Cameroon’s Anglophone Southwest and Northwest regions and in neighbouring Littoral and West regions has reached 437.000, according to the latest UN estimates.
