Beijing, 1 December 2014 – In the context of the Annual General Meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), attended by UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, reiterated China’s commitment to achieving Eco-civilization through the transition towards a low carbon, green economy.*

UN Says Global Carbon Neutrality Should be Reached by Second Half of Century, Demonstrates Pathways to Stay Under 2°C Limit Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions Including Non-CO2 Must Shrink To Net Zero by 2100 Emissions Gap May Widen by 2030 but Low Carbon Path Offers Opportunities for the Future | Source: UNEP
The core aim of eco-civilization is to balance the relationship between humanity and nature, which includes economic development, population, resources and the environment.
The Vice Premier also reaffirmed China’s commitment to pursue energy efficiency, improve economic regulations and encourage market interventions in support of a green transition. This comes in the heels of China’s landmark decision last month to peak emissions by 2030.

By Sven Teske*, 1 December, 2014 — Peru! What comes to mind when you think of Peru? Right! The mysterious Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, which attract and inspire so many people from around the world, and still have scientists puzzling over their origin.

Last night, Greenpeace paid tribute to the old Inca culture, also sometimes referred to as the enlightened ones. They believed in the positive energy of the sun, and so do we.
“Act for the Climate! Go Solar” was the message we projected onto Huayna Picchu, the mountain that overlooks the ancient city. Why here and why now?
Today [1 December 2014], the twentieth UN climate conference (COP20) begins in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
This is the last major round of negotiations before a new climate treaty is expected to be agreed in Paris in a year’s time – a treaty that could pave the way to a global energy transition away from fossil fuels and towards 100% renewable energy.

The international community “must write history” on climate action and build momentum towards a new universal agreement to be adopted in 2015, a senior United Nations official on 1 December 2014 declared as she opened a two-week UN climate conference held in Lima, Peru.

“2014 is likely to be the hottest year on record and emissions continue to rise. We must act with urgency,” Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), warned in her opening address earlier this morning to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the landmark treaty.*
“Here in Lima, to aspire to great heights ourselves, we must draw several critical lines of action,” she continued.

Chania, Greece, November 2014 (UNHCR)* – Nineteen-year-old Doaa al Zamel fled her home in Syria in the hope of finding safety and a better future; she ended up desperately fighting for her life in the Mediterranean Sea and losing her fiancé.

© UNHCR/L.Kolokythas | Doaa was one of only 11 survivors from a trawler rammed at sea while it was carrying more than 500 people. The 19-year-old Syrian was badly sunburned and her face still shows the marks.
She still relives the trauma of September 10, when an unidentified vessel rammed into the smuggler’s trawler that was carrying Doaa and more than 500 other people, including many women and children, who dreamed of reaching Europe. The vessel quickly sank off the east coast of Malta; there were just 11 survivors.

THE PRESIDENT of Israel was aghast.
Ruvi Rivlin, who was recently elected to the high but largely ceremonial post, is far from being a leftist. On the contrary, this scion of a family that has been living in Jerusalem for seven generations, believes in a Jewish state in all the country from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan river.
But Rivlin is a true liberal. When he read The Poem he was shocked to the depths of his soul. Then he remembered that the writer of this masterpiece had been invited to the President’s residence to read from his works. He was promptly disinvited.
For this the President was attacked from many quarters. How dare he? What about artistic freedom?
