Save the Arctic… Now!

By Greenpeace* — Right now Shell is trying to get approval from the US government to start Arctic drilling off the remote coast of Alaska this summer.

But President Obama has the power to stop the drills – and Shell. With his recent proposal to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, it’s clear Obama wants to use his last term in office to leave behind a strong legacy.

Tell Obama to make the Alaskan Arctic off limits to oil drilling now.

A wave of public opinion is rising against Shell’s drilling plans, just when companies are backing away from expensive oil projects and scientists are warning that Arctic oil must stay in the ground. This might be the tipping point where we can stop Shell from drilling in the Arctic.

If oil companies are allowed to drill off Alaska’s shores there is a 75% chance of at least one major spill. Black oil seeping under the ice in this pristine environment would have a devastating impact on polar bears, whales, and all those who call it home.

More than 500,000 people have already written to the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management in protest of Arctic oil drilling. Tell Obama to make it official: put the Arctic off-limits to oil drilling before it’s too late.
