Peace People Press Release – 11 Sep 2015 – Today an Israeli court decided to keep nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu under house arrest for giving an Israeli media interview.
Vanunu’s appeal against house arrest in connection with this interview has been denied.
This adds to the unjust and inhuman treatment he has received for revealing in 1986 that Israel was building nuclear bombs.
He has served 18 years in prison, including eleven in solitary.
Since his release he has been a virtual prisoner within Jerusalem, unable to leave the country, use internet, speak to journalists, foreigners, etc., all actions against international law as he is a prisoner of conscience.

15 September 2015 (UNHCR)* – This year’s Nansen Refugee Award winner, Aqeela Asifi, is being honoured for her courageous work and significant contribution to refugee girls’ education. Since arriving in Kot Chandana refugee village in Punjab, Pakistan, 23 years ago, Asifi has worked tirelessly to allow the girls of its deeply conservative and impoverished Afghan refugee community to access primary and secondary education.

To date, her hard work, sensitivity to cultural and religious values, and persistence have resulted in one thousand girls having the opportunity to attend her school at both primary and secondary level, receiving national lower secondary certification.

LONDON, 9 September 2015 (IRIN)* – For children and young people exploited by traffickers in Southeast Asia, escape or rescue ought to put an end to their nightmare. But new research paints a grim picture of the lasting effects on their mental health.

**Photo: William Barriga/IOM | Even when freed from traffickers, children’s mental anguish often continues (file photo)
Ligia Kiss of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine led a team that investigated the psychological effects on children of trafficking in the region. “We were shocked by the numbers,” she told IRIN.
While such effects have been well-documented over the years, few, if any, previous studies have delivered such quantitative detail with regard to children and adolescents.

This year’s cereal outputs in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua have been severely reduced because of the dry weather associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on 14 September 2015 said.

El Niño, a weather phenomenon characterized by abnormal warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, is accompanied by dry spells that can delay planting, reduce planting areas and stifle crop development.
The resulting crop loss this year will put a large number of farmers in need of agricultural assistance as the sub-region tries to recover, FAO saidsaid in a news release.
“This year’s El Niño’s impacts are even more intense than last’s,” said Felix Baquedano, an economist at FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System unit, which covers Latin America.

14 September 2015 (TRANSCEND Media Service) – Alfàs del Pi, Spain – International Center for Conflict Solution – Seminar 11-13 September

Johan Galtung
The prospects are dim.
Both focus on the worst in the Other, not on the best. Islam justifies terrorist violence–bombs, decapitation–as revenge with moderation; West justifies state terrorist violence–bombing, droning, sharp-shooting all over–as preventive violence.
Killing ratio: like 1:99. Both are escalating in a violence race.
West is Christian-secular with secularisms–humanism, liberalism, marxism–sharing with Islam and Christianity occidental singularism and universalism, the only truth, valid for all, at all times.
A miracle that we have had only the terrible Crusades 1095-1291.
One reason was geographical, in space: Islam in deserts and on islands, Christianity in the temperate zone; today both are all over.
Another reason was historical, in time: Christianity in Antiquity, Islam in the Middle Ages, Christianity-secularism-colonialism-West in Modernity.
Enters post-Modernity: Islam’s turn to be predominant.

This is the concluding part in a three-part series. Part one was published on WSW on 11 September 2015; Part two was published September 12. And on Human Wrongs Watch here and here, respectively.
Silence after the war
14 September 2015 (WSWS)* – During the withdrawal of the German army in October 1944, the Greek People’s Liberation Army (ELAS), the military organisation of the National Liberation Front (EAM), controlled almost the whole of Greece.

This is the second in a three-part series. Part one was published on WSWS on 11 September 2015 and on Human Wrongs Watch here.
Destructive Terror against the Population
12 September 2015 (WSWS)* – The Nazis’ response to the resistance of the Greek people was horrific. They imposed a bloody regime of terror, which, in its brutality, resembled the ruthless National Socialist (NS) wave of extermination in the Soviet Union. National Socialist jargon declared it necessary to establish “order” in Greece and decisively “crack down” on “the formation of gangs,” i.e., partisans. Hitler stated in September 1944, “There are areas, like Greece, that are absolutely incapable of maintaining order by themselves.” (12)

.
And this was what “order” looked like: In Greece at least 100 villages were destroyed and 30,000 fell victim to acts of revenge by the Wehrmacht. Thousands of partisans died in at least 26 hostage and prison camps located on Greek territory.

This is the first in a three-part series.
11 September 2015 (WSWS)* – One can “no longer indulge the stubborn and fickle Greeks.” This remark could have come from the pen of a hack journalist, or from German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble, for whom no austerity package for the impoverished Greek population goes far enough.

Rome, 14 September 2015 – Europe was constructed without secure beams, and those are now visibly coming apart. The idea that a common currency would be enough to integrate 28 countries could have held true with the appropriate generation of politicians still in place. But the present one is incapable of dreams and visions, and the refugee crisis is a good example.

Roberto Savio
So far this year, we have been observing the North-South divide. Creditor countries in Northern Europe did not want to put their resources at the disposal of debtor countries in the South. East Europe unanimously followed the North, with few asking why.
Now another divide emerges: between Europe´s East and West.
Eastern European countries do not intend to assume any responsibility in the refugee crisis, and the image that came to symbolize this attitude was that of female Hungarian journalist Petra Laszlo, caught tripping a running father with his child.
Let us now make some reflections.
The first one, on Europe’s identity. Many take for granted that all European countries share a common history and culture.

12 September 2015 (WSWS) – Over the past month, the world has been gripped by a proliferation of crises—economic, geopolitical, social—erupting on a daily basis, interacting with each other, and raising the specter of a global calamity.
