World Oceans Day – A Death Sea Called Mediterranean

Human Wrongs Watch

ROME, 7 June 2016 (IPS) – While the United Nations identifies 17 major regional seas in its planning, the Mediterranean is perhaps the most dramatic case as it has gone from being the so-called cradle of civilizations to be a cemetery for thousands of asylum-seekers and migrants. “In the few weeks since the preparation of the report, over 6,000 families from Sirte alone have had to flee their homes to escape on-going clashes and military operations against Da’esh [also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL],” said Martin Kobler, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
