‘Yemen War Is Genocide’

Human Wrongs Watch

By Catherine Shakdam*

4 March 2017 (RT)* – No matter how many civilians are killed by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, the international community only condemns the crimes of the resistance, because they oppose Saudi Arabia, says Catherine Shakdam, Shafaqna Institute of Middle Eastern Studies.

The Cannons of Napoleon

Human Wrongs Watch

By Uri Avery*

NAPOLEON CAME to a German town and was not welcomed with the traditional artillery salute.

Furious, he summoned the mayor and demanded an explanation.

The German produced a long scroll of paper and said: “I have a list of 99 reasons. Reason No. 1: we have no cannon.”

“That’s enough'” Napoleon interrupted him, “You can go home!”

I WAS reminded of this story some two weeks ago, when I read Yitzhak Herzog’s 10-point peace plan.

Herzog, the leader of the Labor Party, is an honest and intelligent person.

All the bad things written about him when it seemed that he was crawling towards Binyamin Netanyahu’s coalition have been refuted by the recent disclosure about the Aqaba peace initiative.

The rulers of Egypt, Jordan and Israel, so it appeared, had met in secret and asked Herzog to make peace possible by joining Netanyahu’s coalition. Herzog was hoodwinked by Netanyahu and agreed. He kept silent under the storm of contemptuous reactions. That shows that he is both decent and responsible.

What he was proposing was to win by increasing military spending in the US by 9%, adding a staggering $54 billion to the Pentagon’s budget (which already stands at roughly $600 billion annually).

Previous statements suggest additional funding will be used to buy more warships and warplanes, increasing the number of American ground troops and modernising the nuclear arsenal.

One Nation – “Two Cubas”

Human Wrongs Watch

By MARTHA R. BIREDA*

Wall Street International* – Cuba is an exceedingly beautiful island blessed with lush forests, pristine beaches, sapphire seas, and sunny tropical weather. It is a tourist’s paradise. It is an island that is beloved by its people, its exiles, and those who visit. There is physically only one island, but there are two Cubas; each Cuba seen through very different eyes and experienced in grossly dissimilar ways. Both Cubas are deeply loved.

The first Cuba represents the reflections of wealthy Cubans: Americans who owned businesses in and traveled to Cuba, and those who have heard and embraced the stories of their island before the Revolution.

This group remembers and loves the idea of the life that was, a life of luxury and wealth.

‘An Overwhelming Majority of Women Are in the Informal Economy’

Human Wrongs Watch

Only 50 per cent of working age women are represented in the labour force globally, compared to 76 per cent of men, UN Women reports. “What’s more, an overwhelming majority of women are in the informal economy, subsidising care and domestic work, and concentrated in lower-paid, lower-skill occupations with little or no social protection.”

The Great Rift

Human Wrongs Watch

By Uri Avery*

I BELIEVE I was the first to recommend that the soldier Elor Azaria, the killer of Hebron, be granted a pardon.

But this recommendation was conditional on several requirements: first, that the soldier openly and unconditionally confess his crime, that he apologize and that he be sentenced to many years in prison.

Without these conditions, any request for a pardon by the soldier would mean an approval of his act and an invitation for more war crimes.

Sergeant Azaria, a medic in a combat unit, appeared on the scene after an incident in the center of the Jewish enclave in the ancient town of Hebron. Two young Palestinians had attacked an army control point with knives and been shot.

We don’t know how the first one died, but the second was filmed by a camera provided to the locals by the wonderful Israeli anti-occupation organization B’Tselem.

‘Financial Speculation Led to Unsustainable Global Housing Crisis’

Human Wrongs Watch

2 March 2017 – The world’s money markets have priced people out of cities, a United Nations independent expert has said, blaming financial markets and speculators for treating housing as a “place to park capital.”

“Housing has lost its social function and is seen instead as a vehicle for wealth and asset growth. It has become a financial commodity, robbed of its connection to community, dignity and the idea of home,” said Leilani Farha, the Special Rapporteur on the right to housing.

Labour Market, Key to Equality for Women in Latin America

Human Wrongs Watch

By Alicia Bárcena*

SANTIAGO, Mar 3 2017 (IPS) – Latin America and the Caribbean is the only region in the world where, for the past four decades, states have continuously met to discuss and commit themselves politically to eradicating discrimination and gender inequality and moving towards guaranteeing women the full exercise of their autonomy and human rights.

Since the first Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Havana in 1977, the region has been through years of political, economic, social and cultural changes, which have meant progress for women in the region but which also have shown the persistence of inequality.

We have overcome a number of obstacles, collectively giving rise to exceptional developments.

Significant Rise in Number of Women Dying from Drug Overdoses

Human Wrongs Watch

Citing a significant rise over the past year in the number of women dying from drug overdoses globally, the independent expert body which monitors Governments’ compliance with the United Nations international drug control treaties on 2 March 2017 called for the implementation of gender-sensitive drug policies and programmes.

The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) on March 2 said that women and girls comprise one-third of global drug users yet are only one-fifth of those receiving treatment, as significant systemic, structural, social, cultural and personal barriers affect women’s ability to access substance abuse treatment.
