WHEN I was young, there was a joke: “There is no one like you – and that’s a good thing!”

Uri Avnery
The joke applies now to Donald Trump. He is unique. That’s good, indeed.
But is he unique? As a world-wide phenomenon, or at least in the Western world, is he without parallel?
As a character, Trump is indeed unique. It is extremely difficult to imagine any other Western country electing somebody like that as its supreme leader. But beyond his particular personality, is Trump unique?
BEFORE THE US election, something happened in Britain. The Brexit vote.
The British people, one of the most reasonable on earth, voted democratically to leave the European Union.
That was not a reasonable decision. To be blunt, it was idiotic.

12 June 2017 – TRANSCEND Media Service – When activists like me return from visiting the Afghan Peace Volunteers in Kabul, Afghanistan, young seamstresses there often entrust each of us with about fifty sky-blue scarves.

Kathy Kelly
The word “Borderfree” is carefully embroidered, in English, on one end of each scarf; on the opposite side, they’ve stitched the translation in Dari, the language they speak. The scarves express their yearning to end four decades of war in Afghanistan, a land dominated by ruthless warlords.
“We are the generation who must try to put an end to all war and violence,” wrote Nematullah, an Afghan Peace Volunteers member who teaches children from internally displaced families. His students, most of them displaced by war, live in a wretched refugee camp.
Nematullah wrote in response to my anxious inquiry following a truck bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, on May 31, which killed more than 150 people.

12 June 2017 – TRANSCEND Media Service – West of Jondal is Torsnes, named after the Nordic war god Thor with his Hammer, a center of the Viking era from 800 to 1050, only 250 years. Why so short? Successful with raids and colonization–Gardarike in Russia, Iceland, Greenland, Vineland in Canada. And then: fini. Why?

Johan Galtung
Because they had no future. Evil Lóki had killed Good Baldur–next to Torsnes is Belsnes=Baldursnes. They were doomed. Enters Christianity with Evil Satan and Good God, restoring hope. The end.
The Soviet Union Empire had no future: Communism was undefined. Enters Orthodox Christianity–Putin is a true believer–hope restored.

The life of Saint Francis
Saint Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 in the Italian hilltop town of Assisi. His father, Pietro di Bernardone, was a prosperous silk merchant, and his mother Pica de Bourlemont, was a noblewoman from Provence.
Saint Francis was originally called Giovanni, but his father later renamed him Francesco because of his successful business dealings in France and his admiration for all things French.
After leading the ordinary (somewhat dissolute) life of a wealthy young man of that period, Saint Francis underwent a religious conversion, following which he renounced his inheritance and embraced a life of poverty and service.

Introduction
This book is a collection of biographical sketches showing people whose wise voices from the past can help to guide us today.
All of the women and men, brief glimpses of whose lives and ideas are portrayed here, gave a high place to compassion. None of them was a slave to greed. We need their voices today!
Compassion and Greed: Two sides of human nature
Humans are capable of great compassion and unselfishness. Mothers and fathers make many sacrifices for the sake of their families.
Kind teachers help us through childhood, and show us the right path. Doctors and nurses devote themselves to the welfare of their patients. Sadly there is another, side to human nature, a darker side.
