Human Wrongs Watch

More than half the war-weary Syrian refugees in Lebanon are living in extreme poverty and borrowing money for food and to pay rent has become commonplace, the United Nations on Tuesday 9 January 2018 reported.

Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 1072 in First Week of 2018; Deaths: 81

Human Wrongs Watch

Geneva, 9 January 2018 (IOM)* – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 1,072 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea during the first week of 2018, with around 450 each landing in Italy and Greece and the remainder in Spain. This compares with almost an identical number – 1,159 – coming ashore during a similar period in 2017.

Data on deaths at sea, however, are much grimmer.  Through the first eight days of the new year, a total of 81 Mediterranean Sea deaths of irregular migrants or refugees were recorded. Five of those deaths were in Western Mediterranean waters off Spain and Morocco.

Human Wrongs Watch

While the eyes of the world are on Myanmar’s northern Rakhine and Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh, more than 60,000 Rohingya children remain nearly forgotten, trapped in appalling camps in central Rakhine where the shelters teeter on stilts above garbage and excrement, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on 9 January 2018 reported.

To Liberate Cambodia

Human Wrongs Watch

By Robert J. Burrowes*

9 January 2018 — A long-standing French protectorate briefly occupied by Japan during World War II, Cambodia became independent in 1953 as the French finally withdrew from Indochina. Under the leadership of Prince Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia remained officially neutral, including during the subsequent US war on Indochina.

To Honor Albert Camus on the Day He Died: January 4, 1960

Human Wrongs Watch

By Edward Curtin*

8 Jan 2018 – TRANSCEND Media Service — Because he was not a partisan in the Cold War between the U.S./NATO and the U.S.S.R, Albert Camus was an oddball.  As a result, he was criticized by the right, left, and center.

By Rupert Read*

openDemocray* — For those tens of millions of us who have been watching the extraordinary ‘Blue Planet II’, the final programme in the series (which looked at the human-caused threats facing the seas) may have come as both a wake-up call and a disappointment.

American Diplomacy with North Korea and Vietnam

Human Wrongs Watch

By Johan Galtung*

8 Jan 2018 – TRANSCEND Media Service

Foreword to Michael Haas’ Book

galtung_side

Johan Galtung

What is that American Diplomacy, after US bombing killed 3,5 million in Pyongyang in 1952 and the US Army killed 3 million in Vietnam from 1961 (Kennedy) to 30 Apr 1975 (Ford)?  Softer?

This very rich, well researched book by Michael Haas–a senior, major US political scientist–gives detailed “softer” empirical, factual answers in Part II.  Indeed, highly recommended.

In this foreword, however, I will explore US deep culture implications for US foreign policy, close to “American Diplomacy”.

The US self-image as successor to Israel as MFN–most favored nation–by God, with Chosen People-Promised Land, CPPL, status, is from 1620, on Mayflower.

Human Wrongs Watch

With millions of desperate people across Syria now facing their seventh winter of war, the United Nations warned on 8 January 2018 that intensified military operations in the country’s north are forcing families to flee, in the cold, to areas without enough resources to support them.
