UK Prime Minister Theresa May was defiant on Thursday (15 November), as she dismissed claims from government ministers that her draft withdrawal agreement does not deliver the Brexit that the British public voted for.
“I believe with every fibre of my being that the course I have set out is the right one for our country and all our people,” May said, addressing journalists at a Downing Street press conference on Thursday afternoon.
Her comments came on a tumultuous day for the prime minister, who was hit with two cabinet resignations in the form of Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey.

ROME, November 2018 (Other News)* – It is now clear that we have lost the battle in keeping the planet as we have known it. Now, of course, this can be considered a personal opinion of mine, devoid of objectivity.

Roberto Savio
Therefore, I will bring a lot of data, history and facts, to make it concrete. Data and facts have good value: they focus any debate, while ideas do not.
So those who do not like facts, please stop reading here. You will escape a boring article, as probably all of mine are, because I am not looking to entertain, but to create awareness. If you stop reading, you will also lose a chance to know our sad destiny.
As common in politics now, interests have won over values and vision. The ministers decided (with some resistance from Denmark and Portugal), to reduce Europe’s commitment.
This is going in the Trump direction, who left the Paris Agreement, to privilege American interests, without any attention to the planet. So, Europe is just following.
Of course, those alive now will not pay any price: the next generations will be the victims of a world more and more inhospitable.

13 November 2018 (UNHCR)* — Bedri Hoti knows what it means to be stateless. For years, he led a marginal existence in poverty because the country where he spent most of his life did not acknowledge his right to live there.
By contrast, Boro Topolic lived a perfectly normal life for decades, only to wake up one day and discover he had become stateless.
They are among nearly 3,000 people in Croatia who are stateless, or at risk of statelessness, most of them Roma.

13 November 2018 (Wall Street International)* – Everyone remembers the catastrophic consequences on human rights of broad trade embargoes imposed under the authority of the United Nations in the 1990s, especially with respect to Iraq. This was widely documented at the time. It prompted a shift away from comprehensive to so-called ‘smart’ sanctions.
The past months, unfortunately, have witnessed increased recourse to economic sanctions, some of which are clearly not ‘targeted’ nor intended to be ‘smart’ – but clearly comprehensive, as in the case of the measures re-introduced by the United States against Iran. I noticed that the US Secretary of State openly spoke of the ‘strongest sanctions in history’.

12 November 2018 — British author and social commentator H.G. Wells may have coined the expression that originally popularized World War I as The War that Will End War, as his book, based on articles written during that vast military conflict, was titled. In any case, in one version or another, the expression was one of the most common catchphrases of the Great War of 1914-1918 and has survived as an expression, often used with a grimace of sarcasm, ever since.

13 November 2018 — There is “terror and panic” among Rohingya refugees in southern Bangladesh, who are at imminent risk of being returned to Myanmar against their will, the United Nations top human rights official has said, warning that the returns would seriously endanger the lives of those sent back.
UNICEF/Brown | Over 720,000 members of Myanmar’s Rohingya community have sought refuge in Bangladesh after widespread ethnic violence erupted in the country’s Rakhine province.
According to the UN human rights office, OHCHR, some of the refugees have threatened suicide if they are forced to return, and two elderly men in Cox’s Bazar have already attempted suicide.

An estimated 12 million people may be victims of statelessness the impact of which is “immediate and can be dire”, the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR said on 12 November 2018.
© UNHCR/Diana Diaz | Stella, 12, sits on the bed she shares with her two siblings and mother. She was born in Nigeria but her birth was never registered. Now living in Liberia, after the passing of her Nigerian father, she cannot prove ties to either country.
Echoing that message, UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi appealed for “decisive action” from governments to eliminate the problem, noting that it is the right thing to do, “humanly, ethically and politically”.
