‘Worse Than World War I’

Human Wrongs Watch

14 March 14 2016 (IPS) – When the leaders of 28 European states enjoy again this week their exclusive flights, luxurious suites and official limousines, to meet for a new summit in Brussels to adopt a final decision on their proposed plan of using refugees as bargaining chips, 20.000 Syrians will most probably be still starving in the Idomeni camp in Greece, in a situation that has been described as “worse than World War I.”

Meanwhile, European top diplomatic, legal and juridical experts have been working round the clock to find the best possible ‘politically-correct’ make-up to covert a new draft, camouflaging the one that the European Union leaders reached with Turkey during their March 7 summit in the Belgium capital.

Caring for the Future of Our Children

Human Wrongs Watch

Books and articles on peace by John Scales Avery*

15 March 2016

I would like to make some of the my books and articles on peace more easily available, and so I have made a collection of links to the ones that are on the Internet. Let me explain my motivation in writing. Our present situation is this:

800px-The_Blue_Marble_4463x4163

**”The Blue Marble” is a famous photograph of the Earth taken on December 7, 1972, by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft en route to the Moon at a distance of about 29,000 kilometres (18,000 mi). It shows Africa, Antarctica, and the Arabian Peninsula. | Photographer: NASA/Apollo 17 crew; taken by either Harrison Schmitt or Ron Evans | This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1977 and without a copyright notice. | Wikimedia Commons

The future looks extremely dark because of human folly, especially the long-term future. The greatest threats are catastrophic climate change and thermonuclear war, but a large-scale global famine also has to be considered.

Understanding Self-Hatred in World Affairs

Human Wrongs Watch

By Robert J. Burrowes*

15 March 2016

If you have ever wondered why the global elite hoards their wealth instead of using it to help break down the violence and injustice in our world, I would like to suggest an answer to your question: self-hatred.

Robert-J.-Burrowes

Robert J. Burrowes

If you have ever wondered why weapons manufacturers make weapons to kill other living beings and destroy the Earth, I would like to suggest an answer to your question: self-hatred.

If you have ever wondered why politicians serve elite interests, I would like to suggest an answer to your question: self-hatred.

If you have ever wondered why a parent is violent towards their own child, I would like to suggest an answer to your question: self-hatred.

The explanation for violent and exploitative behaviors always includes self-hatred. Let me explain why.

Conscious self-hatred is an intensely unpleasant feeling to experience and, consequently, people who feel self-hatred learn to fearfully and deeply suppress their awareness of it when they are very young.

Having learned to do this, subsequent opportunities for this self-hatred to be felt are progressively more easily suppressed.

The Great BDS Debate

Human Wrongs Watch

By Uri Avnery*

12 March 2016

HELP! I am walking into a minefield. I can’t help myself.

The minefield has a name: BDS – boycott, divestment, sanctions.

I am often asked about my attitude towards this international movement, which was started by Palestinian activists and has spread like wildfire throughout the world.

The Israeli government now considers this movement a major threat, more so, it seems to me, than Daesh or Iran. Israeli embassies all over the world are mobilized to fight it.

The main battleground is the academic world. Fanatical adherents of BDS are conducting fierce debates with equally fanatical adherents of Israel.

Both sides use experienced debaters, diverse propaganda ploys, phony arguments and outright lies. It is an ugly debate, and getting uglier.

BEFORE EXPRESSING my own attitude, I would like to clear the ground. What is it all about?

Funding shortfalls are already threatening the ability of the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide essential assistance to many of the most vulnerable families. The agency suspended school-meal distributions in December, leaving over 150,000 school children from vulnerable families without the certainty of a daily meal.
