Human Wrongs Watch

The United Nations envoy mediating a resolution to the crisis in Syria warned that the latest round of talks was overshadowed by a substantial deterioration of the cessation of hostilities, and called on the leaders of the Russian Federation and United States to help salvage the “barely alive” pact.

“What we need to do and to hear is that the cessation of hostilities is salvaged and […] is saved from a total collapse,” Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria, on 28 April 2016 told reporters following a briefing to the Security Council.

Syria: ‘Human Toll and Suffering Are ‘Sickening’ – UN Relief Chief

Human Wrongs Watch

With hundreds of thousands of civilians killed, millions of people displaced and countless families torn apart, the UN relief chief on 28 April 2016 described the human toll and suffering in Syria as “sickening,” and said the global community should be “ashamed” that this is happening on its watch.

“It does not require me to say to each and every member of the Security Council, that the impact of five long years of conflict in Syria defies understanding, let alone its description,” Stephen O’Brien, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, told the 15-member body during a monthly humanitarian update.

The Hypocrisy of the West and Fiscal Paradise

Human Wrongs Watch

By Roberto Savio*

ROME, 28 April 2016 (IPS) – The publication of the Panama Papers has now been digested, like any scandal, after just a few days. We are now getting so accustomed to scandals, that it is confusing, and the general public reaction often is: all are corrupt and politics is all about corruption.

Roberto Savio

This, of course, plays out well for the right wing, xenophobic parties, numbers of which are ever increasing in every election, from Donald Trump in the United States, to Nigel Farage in Great Britain who promptly asked for the resignation of British prime minister David Cameron, who is among the users of the legal office of Mossack and Fonseca in Panama, which has helped more than 14.000 clients to create 214,488 companies in 21 fiscal paradises.

In some cases, like Iceland, that brought the prime minister to his knees, is a concrete response to the public indignation.

Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy the Oil Thriller – Pepe Escobar

Human Wrongs Watch

27 April 2016 (RT) – The famous Hollywood adage – ‘nobody knows anything’ – seems to perfectly apply to the current turbulence in the oil market. So in an effort to clarify where the global oil economy is heading to, let’s engage in a Battle of the Oil Analysts.

Residual fuel oil or Bunker C oil. This oil has to be heated to get it to flow. At room temperature it behaves more like a viscous grease. | Author: Glasbruch2007

Relying on these Oil Analysts (OA) does not necessarily mean you will be handed straightforward answers, but perhaps with some luck you will see a ray of light.

Saudi Arabia is saying that they are raising oil production to 12 million barrels a day. That’s highly debatable.

Russia is saying that they can raise oil production to 13 million barrels a day. OA1 cuts to the chase: “Both are bluffing. Prices are still rising. That means no one believes them.”

Choose Humanity: Make the Impossible Choice Possible!

Human Wrongs Watch

UNITED NATIONS, 27 April 2016 (IPS) – We have arrived at the point of no return. At this very moment the world is witnessing the highest level of humanitarian needs since World War Two. We are experiencing a human catastrophe on a titanic scale: 125 million in dire need of assistance, over 60 million people forcibly displaced, and 218 million people affected by disasters each year for the past two decades.

Herve Verhoosel

More than $20 billion is needed to aid the 37 countries currently affected by disasters and conflicts.

Unless immediate action is taken, 62 percent of the global population– nearly two-thirds of all of us- could be living in what is classified as fragile situations by 2030.

Time and time again we heard that our world is at a tipping point. Today these words are truer than ever before.

Treaty Banning Nuclear Tests, 20 Years After – “Action Rather than Celebration”

Human Wrongs Watch

Marking the 20th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 27 April 2016 said that instead of a celebration, the occasion is a call to action on the work that remains to be done to end nuclear testing and continue on an environmentally sustainable path.

Speaking at a panel discussion in Vienna, Ban commended the CTBTO for its two decades of service as a global leader on ending nuclear testing.

“The CTBTO has proven its value again and again,” the UN chief said. “This organization is at the forefront of detecting possible nuclear tests. It has carried out activities far beyond what anyone imagined.”

Any Way to Halt Extremism?

Human Wrongs Watch

ROME, 26 April 2016 (IPS) – “The objective of extremists is for us to turn on each other [and] our unity is the ultimate rebuke for that bankrupt strategy.”

This is what the UN chief Ban Ki-moon has recently said. “While it may be inevitable to draw on examples, such as Da’esh [also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL] or Boko Haram, “the phenomenon of violent extremism conducive to terrorism is not rooted or confined to any religion, region, nationality or ethnic group.”

“Let us also recognize that today, the vast majority of victims worldwide are Muslims,” Ban on April 8 stressed while addressing the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism – The Way Forward.
