18 April 2019 (openDemocracy)* — In the shadow world of the arms trade there is one business model that outshines all others: selling arms to both sides in the same war.

Ideally it works best when weapons you have sold to one side destroy weapons you have sold to the other.

Thus if one side uses air-launched precision-guided missiles to destroy the other’s aircraft (or tanks, armoured personnel carriers or whatever), then it will need to buy replacement missiles, will need to have your people service its aircraft and, if it ‘wins’ the war it will most likely buy new planes from you as it rearms.

Libya: Over 3,000 Refugees and Migrants Trapped in Detention Close to Fighting Range; UN Evacuates 163 of Them to Niger

19 April 2019 (UNHCR)* — UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has evacuated some 163 refugees from Libya to Niger in the first such flight since fighting escalated in the Libyan capital two weeks ago. The flight landed early on Friday [19 April 2019].

As Fighting in Libya Escalates, So Does Number of Children ‘at Imminent Risk of Injury or Death’

In and around Tripoli, an increasing number of children are “at imminent risk of injury or death” two senior United Nations officials warned on Thursday [18 April 2019], citing a surge of aggression in crisis-torn Libya.

General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army, which controls much of eastern and southern Libya, has waged a two-week military campaign to take Tripoli from fighters loyal to the UN-recognized Government.
