By Helena Meresman*, 1 September, 2014, Greenpeace — Safe, affordable and accessible water is one of our planet’s scarcest natural resources. Many people don’t have access to fresh water for sanitation, agriculture, or even to drink.

Photo credit: Umut Vedat | Greenpeace | Old cooling water area in south east Turkey. Local people claim that the ash produced dries up rivers and agricultural lands in the area.
Yet, global water consumption by the power sector is growing; it’s expected to more than double by 2035, with coal projects accounting for 50% of increased water use. Vast quantities of water are used in coal mining, coal washing and for cooling coal-fired power plants.
We cannot allow coal interests to grab already scarce water resources and at the same time dramatically increase their carbon pollution. That will only accelerate climate change and make water shortages even more acute.

Brussels, 1 September 2014, (UNHCR)* by Valeriia Cherednichenko – Three years ago, Railya Abulkhanova told a UNHCR film crew that she felt like a tumbleweed. “It rolls . . . with the breeze it rolls away. That is what it is. That is statelessness,” she said in the story-telling series interview. “And me; I want to put down roots,” Railya added.

© UNHCR/S.Hopper | Railya Abulkhanova is an ethnic Tatar who was born Kazakhstan. She now lives in France and hopes that she will gain citizenship soon. She will address a global forum on statelessness in the Netherlands.
Like many other stateless people around the world, including thousands from former Soviet republics, she’s still waiting. Without a nationality, stateless people find it difficult to access the services and rights enjoyed by citizens. But for the first time in many years, and after several failed attempts, Railya hopes she is close to getting a nationality.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 1 September 2014 voiced his alarm at the announcement by Israeli authorities to declare nearly 1,000 acres of land in Bethlehem as so-called “state land.”

“The seizure of such a large swathe of land risks paving the way for further settlement activity, which – as the United Nations has reiterated on many occasions – is illegal under international law and runs totally counter to the pursuit of a two-State solution,” Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.
The Secretary-General called on Israel to “heed the calls of the international community” to refrain from settlement activity and abide by its commitments under international law and the Quartet Road Map – the plan which calls for Israel and Palestine to live side by side in peace and within secure borders, according to a UN release.
Senior UN officials, including Ban, have repeatedly urged both parties to exercise prudence and to avoid taking unilateral actions on the ground that would further diminish the chances of reaching a negotiated final peace agreement.
