TWO COUNTRIES competed this week for first place in news programs all over the world: Scotland and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

There could not be a greater difference than between these two countries. Scotland is damp and cold, Iraq is hot and dry. Scotland is called after its whisky (or the other way round), while for ISIS fighters, drinking alcohol is the mark of unbelievers, who should lose their head (literally).

However, there is one common denominator of both crises: they mark the approaching demise of the nation-state.

USA/UK Committed Genocide against Iraq People

Human Wrongs Watch

By Mairead Corrigan Maguire*, Nobel Peace Laureate, 22 September 2014 – TRANSCEND Media Service — USA/UK committed genocide against Iraq people between 1990/2012 killing 3.3 million including 750,000 children through sanctions and war.

On September 11, 2014 US President Obama, on the anniversary of 9/11, in his speech promised the world more war, and especially the people of Iraq and Syria when he promised that together with his coalition partners, they would kill every ISIS person in Iraq, Syria, or anywhere in the world they may be.

He described ISIS as cancer cells and promised they would be all killed off.

His Speech was chilling and had the desired effect of reminding us all just how low morally and intellectually the American administration, and their Coalition, has sunk.

For the President to ignore the fact that the USA/UK, NATO, have committed genocide against the Iraq people between 1990/2012 killing 3.3 million including 750,000 Iraqi children through sanctions and war, not including subsequent wars by USA/NATO, against Afghanistan, Libya, Sudan, and their attempted and well funded efforts through a proxy war to destroy Syria, is criminal.

Climate Summit: Extreme Weather Hits Asia, Europe… a Further Indication of the "New Normal"?

Human Wrongs Watch

Heavy rains and flooding devastated parts of the Philippines, France and Italy over the weekend and may be further indications of the ‘new normal’ that the world will have to deal with if no accelerated action is taken to curb global warming, the head of United Nations Disaster Reduction Office said on 22 September 2014 on the eve of the UN Climate Summit in New York.

Margareta Wahlström, head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) said: “Heads of State are expected to make national announcements on both mitigation and adaptation, and we do hope that these announcements will include commitments to disaster risk reduction.”*

The UN Climate Summit on Tuesday [23 September 2014], convened by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is the largest gathering of leaders on climate change to date, which aims to mobilize action and obtain more commitments from Governments and actors of the civil society to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in more resilience.

Beating Climate Change, Either Lead or Get Out of the Way

Human Wrongs Watch

By Arin de Hoog – 22 September, 2014, Greenpeace* — Yesterday  [21 September 2014], over half a million people in 160 countries across the world marched against climate change. What clearer signal can there be to policy leaders that they need to either lead or get out of the way?

Leading means using tomorrow’s climate summit to show that governments are going to take decisive action towards capping runaway CO2 emissions and stand up to the fossil fuel industry.

If they are unable or unwilling to do this they need to get out of the way of the millions of their electorate who see the fatal cracks in the ice. Yesterday’s global act of solidarity adds an exclamation point to the rapidly growing number of people who are demanding that industry be accountable to the planet.

No 'Plan B' for Climate Action as There Is No 'Planet B'

Human Wrongs Watch

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 21 September 2014 told what is thought to be the largest ever march in the United States demanding measures to halt the advance of global climate change, that there is no “Plan B” for action as there is no “Planet B.”

Speaking to journalists after walking with an estimated 300,000 demonstrators on the People’s Climate March through New York City on Sunday he said the world needs to “galvanize our action” and harness the people’s “power to change.”*

As the clock ticks down to the Secretary-General’s much-anticipated Climate Summit at UN Headquarters two days from now [23 September 2014], politicians, celebrities, activists and the general public marched though the city to highlight global concerns about a lack of international action to stop the deleterious effects of climate change.
