The United Nations refugee agency on 11 April 2016 expressed concern about yesterday’s violence at the border between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia near Eidomeni and the extensive scenes of teargas in use.

Spokesperson Adrian Edwards of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) described the development as “a matter of great worry” to the agency, stressing that it should be such a matter to all who are concerned with Europe’s response to the situation of refugees and migrants.

More than 75,000 Palestinian families internally displaced in the Gaza Strip as a result of the 2014 escalation of hostilities continue to live in fraught conditions and are in need of homes, the United Nations relief coordination wing for the Occupied Palestinian Territory on 11 April 2016 reported.

In a press release, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it conducted an “unprecedented profiling exercise” of Palestinian families internally displaced in the Gaza Strip.

But you might also be interested to know that there are a lot of people around the world who are committed to trying. And, if you think the aim is worthwhile, you could be one of them.

The most casual perusal of the media will confirm what most of us suspect: violence takes many forms and it is absolutely pervasive.
But what the media might not report regularly is that there are some phenomenal people and organizations out there that are doing everything they can to tackle one or more aspects of this violence.
And as they identify themselves as part of one or more worldwide networks working on violence, they acquire a fuller appreciation of what is being achieved.

Dear President, dear Dean of Morehouse College, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am deeply honored by the prize from a college in Georgia, in the US South, that has been and is a beacon in the struggle from dominion to dignity in race relations.
The civil rights movement is an American Revolution, like the feminist movement it inspired–aiming at parity and dignity for all. To refuse sharing the spoils of exploiting Reds and Blacks and poor Whites with London was far from a revolution.
This college shaped Dr Martin Luther King Jr. I had the honor of meeting him twice here in Atlanta in 1960–working on desegregation without violence in Charlottesville, VA–and in 1964 in Oslo when he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

With the process of returning refugees and migrants from the Greek islands to Turkey underway as part of a European Union-Turkey agreement, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is reminding States of their duty to care and protect all children and give them a full and fair hearing when deciding on their future.

UNICEF on 8 April 2016 said in a press release that it welcomed a new Greek law, which came into force on 4 April, exempting certain vulnerable groups, including unaccompanied and separated children, children with disabilities, victims of distress and trauma, pregnant women and women who recently gave birth, from “exceptional border procedures” or returns.

Greater efforts in preparedness response, recovery and development interventions are needed from humanitarian actors for African nations to meet the immediate needs of their citizens, become more resilient to shocks and crises, and ultimately achieve food security, senior United Nations officials on 8 April 2016 stressed.

Speaking at an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly at Headquarters in New York on addressing humanitarian needs in Africa, particularly the needs of refugees, World Food Programme Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, who served as the event’s moderator, highlighted that every refugee crisis is by nature also a food and nutrition crisis.
At the same time, she said, food and nutrition crises often drive conflict and displacement.

The deliberate infliction of torture on children is an “unbearable reality” in many conflicts and human rights crises around the world, but the international community must continue to demonstrate its commitment to holding the perpetrators of such acts accountable as well as assist the recovery of affected children, the United Nations human rights chief on 8 April 2016 said.

Speaking in Geneva at the 43rd session of the Board of Trustees of Trustees of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein noted that the Fund’s work over the past three decades shows the “extraordinary capacity” for resilience of child victims of torture, who are often targeted to extract information, pressure their parents, or simply as punishment for supposed misbehaviour.

The objective of extremists “is for us to turn on each other [and] our unity is the ultimate rebuke for that bankrupt strategy,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 8 April 2016 said, underscoring that the action plan he presented to the United Nations General Assembly in January contains concrete recommendations and could be the basis of a global partnership to defeat violent extremism.

While it may be inevitable to draw on examples, such as Da’esh [also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL] or Boko Haram, “the phenomenon of violent extremism conducive to terrorism is not rooted or confined to any religion, region, nationality or ethnic group,” Ban told the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism – The Way Forward, co-hosted by the Government of Switzerland and the UN.
Ban stressed: “Let us also recognize that today, the vast majority of victims worldwide are Muslims.”
