Students Gather at UN to ‘Remember Slavery,’ Honour those Who Suffered Brutal Slave Trade

Students from around the world joined United Nations and Government officials in New York on 27 April 2018 to celebrate the contributions made by the people of African descent, beginning from the time they were taken from their countries and forced into generations of servitude.

Speaking to UN News prior to the event, Missouri Sherman-Peter, the Permanent Observer for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to the UN, highlighted the importance of recognizing the heritage of those compelled into slavery, and informing the younger generation of what happened centuries ago.

Israel Must Address Excessive Use of Force and Deaths in Gaza Protests – UN Human Rights Chief

With over 40 Palestinians killed and more than 5,500 injured during protests in Gaza over the past month – many by live ammunition – the top United Nations human rights official on 27 April 2018 called on Israel to ensure that its security forces do not resort to use of excessive force amid the ongoing demonstrations.

Origin Labelling of Food Boosts Local Economies, Generates an Annual Trade Value of over $50 Billion Worldwide

Rome, 26 April 2018, (FAO)*  A new study has found that food products linked to their place of origin are economically and socially beneficial to rural areas and promote sustainable development.

‘Gaza Is About to Explode,’ UN Envoy Warns Security Council

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is continuing with no prospects for a political resolution and “Gaza is about to explode,” a senior United Nations official on 26 April 2018 said, urging both sides to avoid further clashes along the enclave’s border.

One in four Thyroid Cancer Cases Registered Near Chernobyl Site Likely Caused by Radiation Exposure – New UN Study

25 April 2018 — A quarter of all thyroid cancer cases among patients who were children at the time of the Chernobyl accident 32 years ago, are “probably” due to high doses of radiation received during and after the event, the United Nations body reviewing the effects of atomic radiation on human health and the environment has said.

About 20,000 thyroid cancer cases were registered from 1991 to 2015 among people who were under 18 in 1986 and lived in the affected areas of the former Soviet Union, according to the latest study by the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), which was released ahead of International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.

25 April 2018 (UN Reliefweb)*– Since 30 March 2018, the Gaza Strip has witnessed a significant increase in Palestinian casualties in the context of mass demonstrations taking place along Israel’s perimeter fence with Gaza.

The demonstrations have occurred as part of the ‘Great March of Return’, a series of mass protests, expected to continue up to 15 May.

The large number of casualties among unarmed Palestinian demonstrators, including a high percentage of demonstrators hit by live ammunition, has raised concerns about excessive use of force.

World Leaders’ Gathering at UN, Urged to Help Strengthen a New Approach to Sustaining Peace

Calling for more diplomacy, dialogue and mediation to head off conflicts before they break out, United Nations officials urged a gathering of world leaders on 24 April 2018 to help strengthen a new approach to sustaining peace, which aims to put prevention at the heart of the UN’s work.

New UN-Backed Action Plan Promotes Hiring of Refugees

A newly-launched action plan that encourages employers to expand job opportunities for refugees aims to be a “win-win situation” for both sides, as well as host communities, according to a senior United Nations official.

Launched on 24 April 2018 by the UN refugee agency and the 35-member Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the plan identifies challenges to integrating refugees into the labour market, but also lists concrete actions to boost their participation.
