There are global efforts fighting modern slavery, but one traditional system is still holding strong in West Africa: Trokosi. About the system and what can be done to finally put a stop to it.

What is Trokosi?
Trokosi is a traditional system where virgin girls, some as young as six years old, are sent into Troxovi shrines (shrines for gods) as slaves to make amends for wrongs committed by a member of the virgin girl’s family. Until the Trokosi system came to the attention of the general public in the 1990s, girls sent to the shrines stayed for life.

Dozens of countries and companies are racing to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas driving climate change.

In October climate scientists issued a dramatic warning that we need to change the way we live if we are to avoid the serious consequences of allowing global warming to go 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. They urged changes “in all aspects of society” to limit climate warming.
The warnings chime with findings in UN Environment’s 2017 Emissions Gap Report which warned that we are headed towards a 3°C rise in global temperatures unless countries change the way they do business.

Obviously, we are not there yet. And it may take some time. There is much resilience in that construction, and in the US itself.

But some signs are unmistakable. The US is (kind of) pulling out of the world–of East Asia, Afghanistan, and some of West Asia–“Middle East” as seen by London–setting up camp in North America.
In what this column for decades has referred to as MEXUSCAN; a neutral listing from south to north of the three countries.
However, Washington calls it UMC, for US-Mexico-Canada with itself first (of course), then come Latin Mexico and Anglo Canada.
Not quite incidentally, “UMC” also stands for the US Marine Corps, and its head general was delighted.
Leaving that aside, however: from seeing itself as being on top of the world to being on top of only North America is a rather major “pulling out”.
